Ocean Cartography
We are surrounded by four oceans:
one NW near the Greeks,
one to our east near the English,
one SE of us beyond Uber Isle
& one West near the Romans.
We need to name these oceans.
It's important for us to have a clear understanding of our geography, especially in the light of us soon becoming an ocean-faring race and seeking to find the lost civs.
I propose this thread be for citizens to submit any ideas or thoughts on this matter, whether it be discussion or and ideas for what we could name them. I also ask that the Minister(s) in charge of this matter please respond to this thread as well with any comments you might have...
Potential Names Submitted
Between Russia and Uber Isle : Central Sea, Catherine's Sea, Strait of Peter, Sea of Kruschev
Near the English Coast the Queen''s Sea, Drake's Pool, Sea of Briton
Sea between Uber Isle, Apolyton and Persian coast : Mare Nostrum
and did I hear someone suggest a sea after me?

I agree with both of you guys.
I really would like to have more time now, but I don't. In the next week I'll be able to help you with maps, etc. I hope so.

To have an ocean named after me would be a huge honor....but let's leave that to the people to decide.
The reasoning behind my persistence in this area is simple: find the lost civs = $$$ , as well as the benefits to having a "sphere of influence" that can be both controlled by ground AND naval units. There are many more, but I'll wait for the discussion to catch up to me.

It would seem to me that the nearest civ to each ocean would have named it, and the rest of the civs would have learned of the name after buying that civ's map. Therefore, I would suggest that the four oceans be given names appropriate to the closest civ to them.
For example:
Ocean near the Greeks: Omega Ocean
Ocean near the English: Queen's Ocean
Ocean near us: Banana Ocean
Ocean near the Romans: Caesar's Glorious Ocean
These are just examples, I'm sure more creative people can come up with more appropriate names.

I'll have to look at the oceans before I give names, but I'll see if I can come up with anything interesting

Aro when you get time can you post a map up on this thread showing an outline of current ocean boundaries? Being the official cartographer of Apolyton, I suppose that would be in your power wouldn't it? No rush, just whenever you can find the time.
(I think the two bodies of water to the E and W of Uber Isle are more like seas rather than oceans, maybe we can name those seperately as well)

We NEED to name those oceans, even if only for easy reference.
I'm thinking of 'The Circle Sea' from Terry Pratchett's Discworld... but that's what he calls one of the seas of Discworld, so it's no good for an ocean.
Damn, where are all the Simpsons people? Aren't there any names that we can take from the show? Hey, how is the old sea captain in The Simpsons called? We could name an ocean after him.

Proposed bodies of water that need names:
The Sea that is South of Mingapulco & Ile de Rose, west of Uber Isle, and east of Russia.
Central Sea?
The Sea north of Uber Isle, East of Mingapulco, South of Ubergorsk, and west of old Persia.
The Great Jungle Coast?
The Bay that is east of France, north of Rome and the Iriquois that Hole in the Wall recently connected to.
The giant lake between Germany and England
Forgotten Sea?
The straight between Greece & their Isle
Greek Straight?
The Ocean East of Uber Isle
The Ocean East of England
The Ocean West of Greece & the Iriquois
The Ocean South of Russia and Uber Isle

With the advent of navigation this is currently a bigger issue, although it dwarfs in comparison to the current debate for the French war. However, this will soon need our input.
As soon as Aro is done with his elections, I ask that all submit a list of names that are appropriate for this thread, so that he may create a map labeling these oceans.

We see now that there are only two oceans, one on the northern limit of the map, and one on the southern one ; in fact they are two parts of the same ocean. If there is only one ocean, why not name it the Ocean?
In between are all the continents and isles, separated by seas. Some have an interesting shape : the sea beginning between the Japan and the Iroquis, and ending between India and Rome looks like a channel and could be named The Channel
The sea between Uber Isle, Apolyton and the Persian coast is 100% apolytonian, and could be named Mare Nostrum..

I don't think the "Ocean" really helps us much, only because if someone was giving orders to ships to set sail for "the ocean" then that could have many many different meanings. Of course I don't think any orders like that WOULD be submitted, but still. Not to put that idea down but I'd like to be more specific...
I like Mare Nostrum for the sea between uber, apolyton and the persian coast. Good call on that one.
Maybe the sea or ocean that the English border could be called something like "the queen's sea"
The sea or ocean between Russia and Uber Isle could be named something after one of the great Russian leaders, like Stalin Strait (just kidding, not serious on that one) but I think Strait of Peter or Catherine's Sea would be good...even Sea of Kruschev has a ring to it I think....

On Earth, when we say to set sail for the Pacific is it more specific ?
Geographical names are needed when there are several features of the same kind, to avoid confusing one for an other; when there is only one, as it is the case, naming is superfluous from a practical point of view, but if the name is given for symbolic reasons, that is an entirely different matter ...

No not really. but in naming oceans and seas and regarding them as seperate bodies of water it should allow orders to be easier when dealing with naval/troop movement.

I'm going 'mostly symbolic' and 'probably practical' on that one.
