fortified city?
As you know, you can build a city on a mined hill - you begin to mine and build the city before the settler has finished mining.
In a German forum they asked me if there is a parallel to a fortification: a settler begins to fortify, then you build a city on that place before the fortification is complete.
Question: Will that work?

Very succinct.
The explanation is that the defense bonus of fortifying is superceded by superior improvements. I.e. fortifying is superceded by a fortress, which is in turn superceded by city walls. The higher bonus negates the lower.

OK Marquis, but if you build a city without building city walls, then you don't have any improvement superceding the fortress...
And then, what happens with the fortress?

Just to clear a little confusion: a military unit can "fortify" ie stand in one spot and get a defensive bonus. A settler cannot "fortify" he builds fortresses.
SG is still right. If you built a town on an existing fortress, you get nothing. If you start building a fortress and then build a town, you get nothing.
You need walls.

Building the city while the fortress is being built will result in a fortress within the city - however, it is graphic only, it has no effect on defense bonuses.
