It might be very helpful to study the tips revealed by Paul on his Civ2 OCC Webpage.
Furthermore I would advise to start with one of the first comparison games as the difficulty gradually improved...
Good luck, I hope you give it a try, OCC games are really faster and don't give it up if your first game end's with a defeat - it's named a challenge...

OCC stands for Very Difficult Game.
I think I have made the mistake of playing on normal, random maps rather than the created ones. I can never find the right territory, either not enough shields or not enough food.
I have got as far as:
- being the leading civ in science
- making 6 spaceship components by 2020
- actually surviving the whole game!
And it is relatively quick, but no less addictive.

Another thread asked if you ever cheat. This might be as close as I come to cheating these days. When I decide to play an OCC game, I will continue to restart until I get an almost perfect starting position. (If I can't find one within 5 to 10 moves) If I'm going to play OCC, I might as well start out in a good position.
Then again, even that doesn't ensure victory.
