You can play as long as you like, it is just that the score will not change after 2050 or a victory condition is reached. You can even play after all civs are gone.

I read once that there are a lot of nasty bugs rearing their ugly heads when you keep playing after 2050... Don't know about it myself, though. I never played past that point.
