MP Civ
I don't come to the general forum often, so I hope this hasn't been discussed already, but has anyone else seen this? Is it legit? Are they even allowed to do this? If you can play civ3 online with yahoo, does PTW have any worthwhile feature?

You don't play it online with other people you just d\l online. It's not multiplayer.
Also the way I assume it works (from that page alone, I've never done it myself and I didn't see a link to detailed info) is that you probably d\l something from Yahoo that sort of resembles gamespy arcade, then once you d\l the game you can play it online for a week or something. Another possibility is that you just d\l and you can play it off line but once the week is up you can't play it anymore, however I know from trial stuff that say they will shut down after 7-10 days that you can usually easily bypass this and continue playing which is why I suspects you need to connect to the internet.
Also PTW gives you lots of other stuff as well, 8 new civs, and new scenarios and units. Plus a bunch of other stuff.

it's not MP, it's just online.

I am sure they have the legal bases covered. It may be a deal with the publisher. In any event, I have heard a few sites are going to be doing this with a number of games.

Read the fine print.... NOT MP, but just Civ3, which they download an executable cache to you for a limited rental time, for use on ONE machine. After your rental period, the cache basically self-destructs. Pretty smooth, huh?

Thats a pretty neat idea
How much does it cost?
How do they avoid the hacking problem?

I have a hard time seeing a game as complex as civ3 being a good rental cantidate. A FPS or even RTS maybe.

I agree, vmxa1.
Thanks for the responses, everyone. I knew it was too goo to be true.

That's true. That might even turn people off. They would play it for a couple of hours, get whipped on Chieftain, and never play it again.
Too much to learn in a little time.
Maybe you can rent it for a month?
