Science Report: Progress!
What a productive term for science! We've managed to almost completely catch up to the AI. Here's all the goods we managed to acquire:
From huts: Pottery, University
From other civs: Construction, Iron Working, Warrior Code
Researched: Engineering
Currently researching Invention (for Leo's).
We're planning to go for Gunpowder following Invention (we'll have all the prereqs), but have no plans after that. Here are all the techs we should be able to research immediately after Gunpowder:
Astronomy (Japanese currently researching)
Feudalism (all 3 known civs have this)
Economics
Medicine
Metallurgy
Democracy
Some possible Long-term paths:
Astronomy -> Theory of Gravity
Astronomy -> Navigation -> Physics
Medicine -> Chemistry -> Explosives
Feudalism -> Chivalry -> Leadership
Medicine -> Sanitation
Democracy -> Metallurgy -> Conscription
I know our leader likes Explosives and the Engineers that it brings. Economics (Adam Smith's) also received some votes in the last poll. I'll post a list of what these techs give us later, but you can go ahead and vote. The poll will be open until Wednesday

Well, I vote for Engineers (no surprise). Leo's will upgrade all our Settlers to them. As far as Adam's goes, I certainly want to get it, but our maintenance costs are not really that high. 1 good Caravan to the Chinese gets us 10 turns worth of maintenance costs just by the gold bonus. Getting Medicine (the path to Engineers) would let us build Shakespeare's and have a safe city to rehome our Ships in so that they don't cause unhappiness while at sea.

Seventy four different thoughts on this one:
1) With the navigation thread, we get mag exp. plus one movement so we can deliver caravans and freight faster.
2) Economics: So we can build infratstrucutre and thereby everything faster
3) Democracy: maximum productivity
With AC as the goal, each tech 'trail' has its own advantages and disadvantages....

IIRC Navigation reduces payoffs from caravans and should thus be avoided at all costs.

Ingeneers first : we need roads and mines and cities.
Then Adam's : I don't think other civs may build that WoW before we do.
And if the choosen path is not available, go to democracy, which have the same conditions that Rep, but with no corruption !

So from the results of this poll, can I assume that we want to go for economics and then work towards explosives afterwards? I'll send off my report later tonight, so if you have anything to add, speak up.

NO NAVIGATION
I just recently encountered this bit of wisdom in the Sticky Mouse Academy succession game (link is to Page 5).
Following is a quote from your countryman La Fayette, JCP:
Quote:
|
...the commodity named Hides is repeatedly offered in our glorious capital city and repeatedly demanded in Berlin. This means that, before the discovery of Invention or NAVIGATION, we were able to rushbuild one camel/turn... a cost of 150 gold... and deliver the camel in Berlin for a price close to 450 gold ( + 450 beakers ).
SG[1] seems to have ... successfully researched Navigation, which reduces the selling price by 50% (probably about 225 gold/camel instead of 450 previously). Moreover this also reduces the beakers and cuts down the research derived from that wonderful trade route by about 50%
|
Not every pearl of wisdom lies within the Great Library.

Thank you, -Jrabbit for that point : I too quickly read this thread and did'nt notice this effect.
Actually it seems the reduction would be by one third, as the following posts mentionned.
I generally run to navigation to change from shore sticked trirems to high sea caravels.
In the future, I'll hesitate, because there are pros and cons, as the SG response to La Fayette tells :
Quote:
|
you will recover this loss by the added mobility of our new fleet and their ability to seek out far lands and new markets for our glorious trade goods.

450 gold and beakers for Hides? Why are they so valuable? I'm thrilled to get anything over 200 for other goods. I don't understand this.
