5 Specials in a city
Posted this thread already at CFC.
I'm not quite sure, but I remember a game where I had a city very close to the date line. It had 5 specials.
Did you ever notice this?

If you have a five special city please post it so we can all have a look
Near the dateline the specials can appear in unusual places but never 5 for one city.

I have tried in vain to accomplish this using the map editor, by varying the world sizes, but could not find a way. With that editor you'll see the clear special pattern and how it is clipped at the 0 meridian. If it overlapped there instead, more than 4 specials might appear in a city, but it doesn't overlap. So until a save is posted showing 5 specials in one city, I am a doubter.

ramses II - if you start a game and go into cheat mode to reveal the map you will find that the dateline is always in the area with the most ocean. If too much land is present then canals appear cutting away the terrain.

Yeah, because of the pattern you can't have 3 from one side and 2 from the other side of the zero meridian. You can easily have 1 closer than the pattern would normally allow, but snagging 3 from one pattern precludes any arrangment of 2 from across the meridian falling within the same city's radius.
Has anyone here tried FreeCiv? They use a random dispersal of specials. It's quite possible to have more than 4 in a city radius. I haven't been able to get it working on my Win95 PC, which is a bummer.

No!! Gotta love the perfectionist hunt for city sites with so many possibilities for special combinations!

well that would mean that if you built a city on a special you'd have another special in your radius.. so if any example of this could be found 5 specials in a city would be possible, until then i doubt it can be done

It's possible, with a map editor, for example.

Ramses - just because we have never succeeded does not mean it is impossible - but you must understand our scepticism until such a game is posted ...

If it's possible with a map editor, we'd love to have you show us.

I tried getting five specials in one city by exploiting the "dateline" using the Map Editor and did not succeed. I used all the "resource seeds" between 1 and 64 (at some point it repeats, I'm not sure where). While that did NOT work, something else interesting came up. It's easier to see than explain:
The buffalo appears on the "dateline" at (0,26). It is shared between both city radii (city center marked with grass). Most interestingly, the city to the left has two specials that are only one square apart. This might allow a Size 1 OCC working two specials...

I have never seen a random map generate a location with two trade specials that could be worked by a size1 city. Of course, you could create one with the map editor.
However, a second trade special would not be of great help in size1 OCC anyway. With a single trade special you can reach a 3 turn tech rate. To reach the next quantum research state (2 turns/tech) you need a size 4 city with at least 3 trade specials and a Railroad trade bonus connection to a foreign city. 1 turn/tech requires a full blown city.

Caeser,
I believe most of the special pattern widths divide evenly into the widths of the standard size maps used by the game, making the patterns seamless at the 0 degree meridian.
Elephant,
You can get a lot of strange lineups by also varying map widths, but since patterns are clipped at the meridian, it is very unlikely (I don't dare say impossible!) that doing this while varying the seed will give you a map with 5 specials within the range of one city. Keep trying, though! I'd love to see an actual example of this "myth".

Look at Elephant's picture. If the field left beyond the buffalo would be gras, it could be a hidden special - et voila!

It can't be a hidden special, it's not in the pattern.
