The Value of Selling Technology
The cost of deleoping science is give at
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...368#post600368
The cost of development decreases with each civ that gets it. In patch 1.21, which the demo game uses with all 12 civs discovered the cost of the second civ getting it is 11/12 the cost of the first, the third is 10/12x ect.
Civs are willing to pay 1/2 the development cost to buy it, so if all 11 civs bought it at full price, you would get
1/2x(11/12+10/12+9/12+...3/12+2/12+1/12)=
66/24=11/4 of your cost, a tidy profit!
If only 4 bought it, you'd get
1/2x(11/12+10/12+9/12+8/12)=38/24=19/12, so you'd get more than you paid for it, and there would be 7 civs that got nothing ,which makes them less competitive in the long run, which means there would be less civs you'll have to attack to prevent them from getting the Spaceship
Even if only 1 civ bought from you, you and he would be paying roughly half price, while the other 10 civs would be falling behind.
The other advantage none of your competition would be profiting by selling the tech first.
This technique can be the fastest way of multipling economic advantage (much faster than rush building)!

Thank you realpolitic. This is quite true.
Now, wouldn't it be darned conveinent if we had techs to sell

There is one thing to worry about. When selling, avoid gpt deals except with civs that you have an attack surface. Remote civs will break those gpt deals at the drop of a hat. Local civs will also break, but they are easily punished for their indescression.

Yes, here's how we can do that. Keep the tax slider at 100%. Stop rushbuilding except in the 2 places it's most valuable: Building the FP and Palace , then when a a new tech becomes available buy it. Then set the science slider at the highest we can without going bankrupt, the savings we've aquired by not rushbuilding should help us put raise the science rate above its "natural" level. Then when we sell, we'll be able to party

Sounds like an excellant plan. It is also good to get a tech "buffer" so you can get a jump on wonder production, and producing the most advanced units of attack.

Switching to Democracy will help with our science endeavours.

Actually, we already get the some commerce bonus as Democracy under our Republic. The benefit of Democracy is a faster worker rate (which comes at the price of higher war weariness).

Kloreep, actually Democracy does indirectly help our science production.
There is lower corruption under Democracy than Republic. So we'll be making slightly more more money and also might be trimming off 1 full turn of research per tech post FP with the number of cities we have.
