Will we be able to play with all 24 civs at once?
I'm not sure whether this question has been answered yet, but will the 16 civ at once limit be removed? I also hope for the ability to create larger maps if possible.

You can play with 16 civs on tiny maps too. Just change it in the editor.
I tried it once. It was quite... chaotic.

In PTW, no. The maximum at one time will be 8. In SP, I think the max. will still be 16 at a time.

You are half right, CiverDan. In MP, the limit is 8. In PTW single play, the limit will be raised to 31 at once. Of course, to get this number you would need to 'roll your own' because it'll only come with 24 civs.

In my game the largest civ had four cities in that game. And I had three while all 16 lived.

I see some great world map scenarios coming....
All ready we have animated era-specific Ethiopian, Polish, Polynesian/Hawaiian, Scottish, and Inca leaderheads. Just two more and we can have a 31 civ world map with every civ animated leaderheads! Or we could just pick civs and add them without leadeheads.

The UGO guy said it was set to 16 when he played it didn't he? I mean I know he said this could be changed but I don't see why they would cut it in half (sure these game would take longer but if you have the time you should be able to choose it if the game can handle it). Or is the 8 player for 8 human players and up to 8 AI players? anyone 100% certain?
I think what he said was 8 humans and 8 AI but maybe he meant that's the most you could have at once of either one (though 8 AI in 8 slots would mean no players), but maybe he meant up to 7 AI or up to 8 players to fill up the 8 slots. In other words you don't need to have AI and you don't need to have humans if you don't want to but I know one of the shots said 16 players didn't it?

If the UGO guy said that, he was mistaken. You can have up to 8 players in a MP game, whether they are human or AI.

And I thought 16 on a tiny map was crazy. I think I'll definitely have to try that.

Not really, only 8 to 10 civilizations on a standard map would get to survive the Ancient Mosh Pit before getting to medieval.

You guys are crazy... I for one like to play the game... I have a 2GHz processor, so I guess I'm able to play with many civs, but I like the standard map, with normal amount of civs, so I can get some lebensraum...

I've been playing with 20 civs at once ever since I got PTW. The first turn where everbody founds their first city lags a bit though.

Why arbitrarily limit it like that? Yes, huge numbers of human players could tend to get ridiculous, but I don't see anything inherently unreasonable about two or three human players (or one human player playing two civs, as I've done occasionally in other games) against a lot of AIs on a large or huge map. I've always found it irritating when people who write the programs I use think they know what I need or want better than I do.
I love the game and appreciate the hard work you put into it, but I wish it didn't have this irritant.

Two human players versus 6 AI has a long "down time" already once the empires start to get built up. Just imagine the 24 player huge game (AI turns take 5-10 minutes in SP for me in the ones I've tried) and then add internet lag into the equation. 15 minute+ waits for turns would not really work well in an MP environment.
Imagine also that the next thing people would complain about would be something like this "You allowed 8 human players against 16 AI players. There shouldn't be this arbitrary limitation. I want 24 human players on an giga-map. I've always found it irritating when people who write the programs I use think they know what I need or want better than I do."
 j/k
Seriously the game would crawl, the most players I've played with and had playable reponse is 5.
The other thing to remember is that Civ3 was designed as an 8 player game and most of the areas that allow for more players seem tacked on rather than designed in.
Now having said all of that, I see no reason why for PBEM games (where these bandwidth/lag/AI wait/human wait issues do not really apply) there shouldn't be an allowance for all 31 players.

Not on my computer it doesn't
Like I said, 5-10 on a huge map. Remember that MP will run proportional to the speed of the worst computer and the worst internet connection.

Also remember, with the new gameplay modes (regicide et al) the AI has NOT been configured to use the rules. It would make winning too easy against a bunch of AIs in MP, as they would have no idea that they should go for your king and you're going for theirs.
Perhaps with normal play in PBEM, but other wise the lag or sloppy AI would make it impractible.
