Upgrading
What are the requirements for upgrading units?
Here is my prob:
I'm in the Middle Ages and have a bunch of spearmen in cities which I want to upgrade to pikemen. They all have iron in their strategic resources box's but only some cities can upgrade. They are also all joined by road.
I have 2 iron sources.
What else do I need to do?

the wonder sun tzus art of war puts a barracks in all of your cities no cost (if i recall), and leonardos workshop lets you upgrade units at half cost

sun tzus only puts barracks in cities on the same continent as the wonder.
Its probably my favorite (after hoover), especially when I am on a large landmass, makes for faster attacks, quick heals, vets etc.
leo's is nice too, esp when upgrading mass amounts of defensive units.

I rarely manage to get those wonders unless I play monarch, so sad. I once did get Sun Tzu on deity, but never both.

True, since I've moved up to emperor, my only hope for Sun Tzu is a great leader. Luckily I am on the warpath with chivalry which creates a leader every once in a while. But I don't know the last time I built leo. I only care about Sun if I'm on a decent sized continent, otherwise its cheaper just to build barracks.

Hm, I went for Hoover dam, and before I had the tech I started building Palace. But someone got there first....
So I try to stall the building of the palace, but unfortunately there were no other wonders to build and I also didn't want to build a city improvement and loose 700 shields.....
So the palace was mooved and it costs me 70 gold per turn......

It sounds like you should have wasted the shields.

Wouldn't it be nice, if that 99 percent ready Great Wonder could be left like that, as a monument of one's failure, maybe generating 1 culture?

No, that would not be a good idea. But it WOULD be nice if you could stop the production. I know you can put all workers of your city as entertainers, but then your food is also stopped.....

Let's say two great, actual civilizations would have started to build pyramids at the same time. Just when civ nr.2 is laying the top stone of its pyramid, they receive a message saying that civ nr.1 has just completed building pyramids. Do they just let it rot or something?
Well, losing the race hurts enough allready, but wasting shields hurts like hell. Maybe the rest of the shields unused from the switched marketplace could be re-distributed to the rest of the civ? There's allways need for good stone.

Hm, I'd like that. But I guess that would be too powerful and soon exploited....
Because then you can pool your unused shields in some wonder you know you'll never build and later on use it for other cities. So you transfer shields from one big city to several other cities....
Hm, sounds very good!
