What patch(es) do I need?
I just started playing Civ3, using a disk I got from a colleague (who said, "here, take it! I can't win. I'm going back to Settlers! ). It's version 1.07f. Now, I don't care about huge maps, or playing 16 civs, or making scenarios, or any of that. I just want to play Civ3 the way it was intended, but without bugs. Do I need any patches? If so, which? TIA.

As statusperfect said, 1.29f. You want it because it solves numerous bugs and imperfections in the original release, adds various interface level enhancements, and improves the AI in order to make the game more enjoyable.

OTOH, you must remember that many things (commands, Civilization traits, unit statistics, etc.) will be changed after you apply the patch: your game manual will become wrong in many pages (well, more wrong anyway ).
And just in case you ask: 1.29f include all previous patches, so you can install it and you'll be ready.

Quite correct!
Actually, I have just noticed a thread where Nethog offers a 1-page unit statistics reference sheet and 1-page tech tree reference sheet. You will want to get them probably... the thread is here.
