My Civ3:PtW first impressions!!
I just got the game. As in, 30 minutes ago. Here are my first impressions.
The new intro movie i enjoyed MUCH more than the old one, i especially like the part where the rifleman are jumping over the low wall.
The new intro music, and menu theme, are MUCH better, IMO, even though it is just a somewhat remix version of the old music, i think it has a more modern, all around better vibe to it.
I started a single player game, as the Cartheginians, with all the new Civs, standard map. I didnt play it very long, as i wanted to try multiplayer. The new barbarian Ai is MUCH better IMO. They no longer go directly at the nearest opponent, they avoid attacking on mountains, etc, and sometimes walk right by you towards the weaker unit/s.
"Hannibal, is that a cartheginian hobo near Madrid?"
ALso, id like to mention, the graphics seem much more crisp. They arent completely over hauled, but the landscape, and especially resources, luxury resources seem much more 'in=place' now.
Now, onto MP... This is what ive been looking for... I read everythign here and at Apolyton, didnt believe everythign negative so decided to try myself...hoo boy...
First off, i have to mention the other players in the lobby. LOL! They were very very very pissed off. VERY!!! There is no lobby list, so i cannot see who else is even in the lobby, individual players have the ability to change the text to bold to italic to whatever, by themselves!! I could change it for everyone if i so wanted, this will be sure to anger a lot of people for times to come.
I attampted to join games. three times. I succeeded in one of these attempts. The rest made Civ3 crash. Mind you im on 56k. But this is happening to EVERYONE in the lobby. On my third attempt, i succeeded with some other players that were as aggravted as I by this point. We setup the rules, etc (the chat in game setup is laggy, btw) then proceeded to launch. The launch went through smoothly, i was happy!! Then the game loaded and i got the "Waiting for session to begin..." window. And we waited. And we waited. AND WE WAITED. Finally, we all decided, through the ingame chat, to just quit. The game would not load after 10 minutes (literally, 10 minutes).
Overall, im very happy with the single player improvements.... but Mp...oh god, this is very very bad.. when i say bad, i mean horrible. I cannot, even though i love firaxis and all theyre games, in good trust say this should have been released at this point. The MP is next to completely not workable.
I didnt have any install problems like some people are reporting, or any disc problems. Im running on Windows XP, and the 1.04f patch.

Quod Erant Demostrandum
O sea, que se veía venir
Chapuceros.

Demasiado pronto, demasiado mal.
