PBEM #2
Well, that other game seems to be full. So maybe a second game would be in order.
I would prefer 4 players, 4 AIs.
Other settings?
Who wants some?

What the heck is a PBEM, anyway?
If it doesn't hurt I'm willing to try.

Sir Ralph, are you taking them up on the offer to get the US English version sooner?
/Edit. Darn, that news item doesn't say earlier, does it?

Why do I have the feeling that playing a play by email Civ 3 game against Sir Ralph probably WOULD hurt?

I'm expecting it within next week. Okaysoft announced the release date Nov 4th, while they still thought that Infogrames releases it Nov 1st. So in fact, now the release may be even earlier. To release it later would be pointless, because the CD of the German version, announced for Nov 21st, contains the US version as well, but costs less (€29.50, as opposed to €41.50).
If you can't wait that long, go ahead and start without me, I'm sure I'll find another party.
EDIT (Update): Just phoned Okaysoft. They said they ship it next Monday or Tuesday. So I think I'll have it next Wednesday (Nov 6th) at the latest.

Surprise, surprise, but I actually never played Civ3 MP before. So you're welcome to whack my undefended settlers.

Sir Ralph. I will happily wait.
Do you think we can get Theseus in this? That would be good.

So you sign up for PBEM
I guess as a European I will have to wait for a month to see it in the stores and I certainly will start a few PBEM games.
For people that have no experience in PBEM games know that the more players and the larger the map is the longer it will take to finish. Most of the delay comes from the players and not the game itself so having a game finished after 1-2 years, even more it will probably be the most likely. But then again it greatly depends from the player that join and how reliable are in speed and time durability
Have a good game

I agree, that more human players add more diversity and fun, but keep in mind, that each human player makes the game slower. That's PBEM, not turnless MP . And about Theseus' butt, well, kick or be kicked, time will show .

My butt shall remain pure...
Actually, I've never played any kind of Civ MP either, so be gentle.
I'm in... I'm getting PTW today or tomorrow.

You can count me in, if there's still space.
Anybody who wants a slightly more organized sign-up utility, I banged out a simple PHP script to handle game signup. It's not quite done yet, but you can create games and sign up for them.
When it's finished (hopefully soon), it will handle uploading saved games and taking turns, too.

Questions:
How fast do turns go?
How long will a game take? hours? Days? Weeks?
I'm intrigued by PBEM just not sure how huge of a commitment it is. It's got to be faster than the online-version (hehe).

Answers:
Depends how fast you play and how many players... I would expect a committed team of players to play 1, maybe 2 turns per day. Possibly more if they are in the same timezone and early in the game.
Game will probably last the best part of a year at least.
Its not such a huge commitment. Will probably take 5 mins a day to play, not counting discussions with other players.

I like this work. Simple and efficient.
If it manages to store saved pbem games will be a great toll to use.
I think this section should have some thing like that, so we can have the threads to discuss he game itself AND a place to manage the game properly.

I've played a ton of Warlords 3 and AoW PBEM over the years and I've learned that no matter how committed people are on the day they join up, some will disappear over time.
The most successful games I've had were with smaller groups, like 3-5 players, in games that lasted a few weeks to a couple months. We usually try for 1 turn per day but end up with about 4-5 turns per week and that's a pretty good pace. Sometimes we'd go a few days without seeing the game but hey, people have lives.
Anyway, just a thought. I'm still interested in getting into one of these PBEM's, though!

I'd be interested in joining a game. I may have to be walked through the mechanics at the beginning.
