have we yet established what's so great about them?
Didn't Firaxis say they had some special function, but wouldn't say what it was?

Well, for one thing you don't need Rubber to get them, but thier stats aren't as cool as Infantry, but I assume you already know that.

They require no resources to build, so they are the last no-resource unit in the game. Also, you can upgrade warriors, swordsmen, and Medevial Infantry to them.

So they don't have any real special function?

I think its good that we will no longer be stuck with stacks of swordsmen in the modern age. Till now I have been using them as garrison forces to prevent conquered cities from culture flipping.
