Apart from the gamespy " direct connect"-option in the previous patch I haven't seen anything about a real hack yet. Granted, I don't follow PTW in depth so I could be mistaken.
Have they hacked it yet?

This would not be correct.
You start a Direct IP game via the PTW lobby. In the PTW MP screen you have a Location control. If you set it to 'Internet', you will be playing via GameSpy. If you set it to 'Local' you will be on your LAN, or hosting a Direct IP game.
So, the host sets Location to Local. Then clicks 'Host'. The players then click 'Direct IP' and enter the hosts IP address at the prompt. GameSpy is by-passed for that game.

Yes, thanks, we'll have to try that. But it is amusing to look at the ping rates.

Shouldn't be high for a direct connection between you and War, say, 100 on average.

Aren't they pretty much one in the same, since you can see BOTH lobbies from the gamespy(ware) site?
Thanks for the info though!

Mostly just the latter, though I try to get in a game when I can. Been really busy, though I am keeping an eye on civ3 MP. Perchance we shall meet on that battlefield soon if the battlefield is worthy of such warriors as us.

My gaming time has been fragmented lately, and civ2MP, whilst I love it, isn't really a game you can play in too many bits and bobs
As soon as I get civ3MP I will msg you though; if you have played with Rah you can show me how the pieces move.

Well I haven't rushed out and bought it. I did that with Medieval Total War and MP was unplayable until the 1st patch.....isn't much better now.
MP is where the dedicated fans are, but SP is where the money is for a lot of games. Not a good combo for us dedicated fans really.

well we tried a couple of different games with the first patch....those were a nightmare,
then we played with the new patch but the lag with one of mates was brutal that night so .....
its been hard to get our group together to play, but civ3 doens't have the same feel as the first two did.
the game at this point is a total bust IMO, but there are signs that it could be salvaged
proper testing is still needed to make a fair assessment

I have had trouble for a couple of days with my connection slowing down dramatically. Next time it should be better though...
Testing should be interesting at least, since none of us really know what the hell we are doing.

I tested it for 10min. The game lags as the host, civ2 had no lag as host. The chat is ****ing beyond bad. It's probably the biggest example of gross incompetence at work. How hard is it to make a simple text only chat? Civ2's chat was a hundred times better than Civ3's chat. Everywhere I look I see incompetence in civ3. It was the first time I played PTW, and the last. I played about 4 turns and decided the game was just too ****ing bad.
