If you're on a big map and have many captured workers, add 7 and then 1 every turn after, so it can use its full radius.

In the last year Ive only managed to build it 4 or 5 times but the sweetest was when I spotted the Persians with a city with one Iron and two coal and swiftly relieved them of this prime piece of real estate, naturally I built the Ironworks there when the dust had settled

I get often, but usually it is too late to matter much.
I should add that is after 129f, before it was very rare.

Jag, in PtW you cannot do that "adding workers with a food deficit" trick (according to the readme).

can you build more that one iron works, should the opportunity arrise?
Size of the map will dramatically affect the chances of Iron Works, as will no. of players.
PLaying on a 200x200 size, with 4 players,I rarely (about 1 in 15 games) get a chance to build one.

I've never seen Iron Works as I always play on large maps

A large map should provided an occassional IW chances. I have seen it on std maps. I may be a function of the age/temp/etc as you need mounains and jungles to get a good shot at coal and iron.

The ironworks is awesome, but rare. I see an opportunity for it once every 3 or 4 games. Once I got it in a city surrounded by only grassland and hills... 1 coal and 2 iron. Let me tell you, that was sweet...

To really benefit, you need to have a really hilly area.
What is the highest sheild output you can manage. Ive got 110 from a city without Iron works pre manufacturing plant.
My Iron works cities are almost never well positioned sheild production wise

Well, I don't remember the shields, but I had a modern armor out in 2 turns.

The one time in all the games I've played that I could actually build the Iron Works, the city so far away from my two cores that the its shield output would have been low regardless. I rushed a factory and such anyway, just to say I built the darn thing at least once, but eventually let the city fall to the AI. The game ended long before they even thought of building Iron Works.

I have been able to get it in more than half of my industrial games, but quite often in cities that suck in other ways. Never ever in my capitol on a random map. The best place I have had it in was in south England on Marla's Earth when my capitol was in Germany, but that map is rigged.

I built one in my last game, city was on the coast with at least 4 mountains mined and a couple of hills 2 or 3 plains irrigated and the rest mined desert. Oh and had a fish on 1 coast square plus 2 other coast and 1 sea.
It was very close to my palace in fact it was the second city I built but the shield output was only about 85 or 90 a turn prior to man fac plant. Still enough to crank out MA in one turn, unless I built a worker it dropped to two turns until the pop grew back.

Once had it in a ceded English town right between my FP and capital. It was glorious. ICBM in 3 turns, when the pollution didn't make it 4 turns.

Really? Ironworks is almost always in the most productive city of mine. I think I get one fairly often and if I don't, I've usually gotten it from one of the cities I conquered.
Once I got real lucky with the map and ended up with 3 cities with production 140+ post manufacturing plant & nuclear plant. My best was the iron works city at 152 (144 after corruption) It could have been better, but the city lost the coal before it's full production could be realized.
That's 3 cities pumping out MAs at 1 per turn, unstoppable.
But I don't think I've ever had ICBMs at 1/3 turns

IN AU 105, we specifically tried to combine a GA with the IW for max production. A lot of people did very well, but Catt, playing an OCC, got up to 210 shields per turn. The screen shot is in the middle of this page:
http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...0&pagenumber=3
If you read his post, btw, he experimented with mobilization as well, and got up to 259 shields per turn!!

I can never work out what the total bonus will be after each improvement.
I know factory x 50%
other plant 50%
nuclear power 100%
mfg 100%
Iron work x100%
GA upto +21 sheilds
Is this correct? Anyone know a link to a better explaination?

With a Manufacturing Plant, Nuke Plant and Hydro Plant I've churned out Modern Armor in 1 turn during a golden age.
They're just too hard to come by. But, as soon as I get coal I scan the maps for the combo.

Do it the other way -- GA first since the improvements will turn the 21 extra shields into much more. So:
GA extra shield in each tile already producing one (max 21).
Subtract wasted shields. Then:
Factory x 50%
Coal / Hydro / Solar Plant x 50% -- Nuclear Plant x 100%
-(only one of the above plants at a time)
Iron Works x 100%
Mfg Plant x 50%
Total possible is 300% on base, net shields.
Catt

I have only ever got as far as building MFG plants once, and only recently discovered Nuclear plants give 100% impovements
