Nethog's Civ3 PTW Tech Tree & Unit Summary
I have completed both a units summary and tech tree for Civ3 Play-the-World. Each summary can be printed on a single 8.5"x11" sheet of paper. You can download them both at my web site at:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pmm1/games/games.html
(Make sure you get the PTW files and not the Civ 3 Classic files).
The formats available are GIF, Native Powerpoint/Excel, or PDF. The native M$ files print with the best quality.
Feedback of any errata/suggestions etc is welcomed.

Thank you; I have to get sleep soon, but I have d/l them, and will look at them later. You did a great job with the earlier Civ3 stuff, looking forward to more of your work.

Thank you , nethog.
I have used your Civ1, Civ2, Smac, and Civ3 tech trees. It is so good to have it all on ONE page and not have to shuffle through a lot of pages.
And now one for PTW!
You do such good work.
Thanks for this contribution to the Civ community.

Wow, that unit chart is outstanding! Very easy to read and gives you all the information you could possibly want right on one page. Very nice.
The tech tree on the other hand seems a little too "busy". I'd like to see the same layout as the units sheet for the techs, with the upgrade paths replaced by the tech progression.
But maybe that's just me.
Thanks much for both!

Stuie, glad to hear you liked the units summary. "Oh-well" about the tech tree - at least it didn't cost you much eh?

Thanks all for the compliments! alva848, there is an older version of my PTW tech tree/units summary in the Apolyton files area - I have requested an update to the link, but whoever does the updates is never too quick. Anyway, my web site ( http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pmm1/games/games.html) will always be available for the anyone wanting the latest version of my reference material.

thanks very much.
this will sure make things easier for me as I am still learning the value of techs and usually dont know if the AI civs are offering me even a decent deal.

Nethod,
Getting bette with time.
A couple of adjustments would make postscript printing cleaner:
1. remove background shading color in order to increase contrast and decrease print time
2. PDF file is about 1/16" too wide and edge gets truncated spliting the arrow to right of Metallurgy in half. Just resize a tiny bit and it all should print well.
The included URL should help us all find the pages again when this thread disappers.
Really handy reference sheets.

Once again, THANKS for all of your compliments. Don't hesitate to post enchancement requests and I will try and incorporate them.
Planetfall, I am not sure what background color you are referring to since I am not using a background color in PowerPoint. I just omitted the background on the Powerpoint slide on my version 1.01 working copy to see if that helps. Also, looking at a hardcopy printed from both the PowerPoint and PDF, I am not getting the truncation you are getting. I did tweak my working copy to shift the techs over a little bit. If you PM me with your e-mail address, I can send you my 1.01 working copy for you to check since I have no way of verifying if this solves your particular problem.

I have posted version 1.1 of my Civ3 PTW tech tree on my web site at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pmm1/games/games.html
In the 1.1 tech tree release I have squeezed in a Government summary chart!! I have also added city improvement costs and upkeep amounts, Great wonder costs and obsoleting techs, and minor wonder costs. I have also included the cost for all spaceship parts.
In addition, I have also posted version 1.01 of my Civ3 PTW units summary. This is a minor update with mostly formatting changes, the most significant is use of color to more clearly highlight the unit upgrade chains.
As usual your feedback is welcomed.

Nethog,
Just FYI, type 2 postscript font did not work this time. Thus no need for directions on page 1. Don't bother adjusting this time.
Under govt summary, what do "MP" and "C&W" stand for?
Integrated defense has redundent label:
"5 SAM Missile Batteries"
expanding 'SAM', reads
5 Surface-Air Missle missile batteries

Right Cian!
PF, you are correct regarding the redundant use of "Missile" in "SAM Missile Battery", but since the game refers to it this way I will leave the redundancy in my chart.

Why do so many units have "draft" in them?
As far as I know, drafting only becomes adviable with Nationalism, which itself allows Riflemen and requires no resources.

The game documenters must be the same ignorant people who brought us:
- AEGIS ships that don't defend vs bombers
- irrelevant navies
- minuscule air forces
And who says there is no call for a Civ4?
Have a great weekend.

Why do so many units have "draft" in them?

Good question! A month or so ago, when I first put the Civ3 units summary together, I was new to Civ3 and I used the editor settings to identify all special unit capabilities - the units I marked with "draft" are given that flag in the editor. My guess is that Firaxis marked earlier-era units with Draft to ensure that draft works with scenerios when draft is made available in an earlier tech by the scenario creator. If anyone else has a better explanation please let me know! Anyway, my units summary of course pertains to the standard game, and I will remove the "Draft" note for all units prior to Rifleman (unless someone else comes up with a reason on how earlier-era units can be drafted in a standard game). Thanks for catching this joncnunn.

NetHog, a small suggestion: what about putting the research cost factor in brackets after the tech name in your chart?
Like Alphabet (5), Pottery (2) etc.
This kind of information comes in handy from time to time.

vondrack, I would add tech costs if they were constant, however tech costs vary depending upon how many other civs already have the tech ( http://apolyton.net/forums/showthrea...=science+works) so adding the base tech cost would be of little value would it not?

Nethog,
I also would like the base tech costs on the tech tree. Reason is for help in evaluating the worthiness of an AI tech trade offer. It isn't too hard to see how many other civs have a tech and then to know roughly how much the tech is discounted. It is more difficult to find the base numbers for the tech value.
Currently I switch to the editor, open the bix, select the tab, select the GW's and then have an idea how worthy the trade offer is. Just as it is quicker to see values from your one page sheets, it would be quicker if the tech base costs were on the one page tech tree summary.
Not urgent, but would be a nice addition on your next version.

Nethog,
Cool. I added them in upper right hand corner of each tech. Here is how I used them in current game: Celts offered Philosophy for Literature. That would be trading a 6 tech for a 10 tech. I checked the sheet and saw Law and Literature was an even trade. I was then able to get Law for Lit +10g. A much fairer trade for me than Philos for Lit.
Now, if someone would suggest a method of determining the amount of gold to offer for X tech, that sure would make trade decisions easier.

I have posted version 1.2 of my Civ3 PTW tech tree on my web site at http://mywebpages.comcast.net/pmm1/games/games.html
In this version I have added the *base* tech cost (from editor) to each tech (Hope your happy PF and vondrack! ). See http://forums.civfanatics.com/showt...&threadid=29485 for more details on how to calculate actual tech cost.

I'm happy!!!!!!
I've looked at the tech cost calculator and it's main problems are:
1- need to switch between it and civ
2- since it doesn't really calculate current present value of trades of
A: tech for tech + cash
B: tech for tech + luxury(ies) + cash
A ballpark by looking at the base cost is more useful.
Thanks again.
