Domination on 362x362?
So, I was messing around in the map editor with really huge maps, and I got to wondering how many cities you would wind up with if you decided to go for a domination victory on 362x362 60% ocean pangea.

362 x 362 = 131,044 tiles on the map
131,044 * 40% = 52,417 land tiles (approximately)
52,417 * 2/3 = 34,945 tiles that need to be in your borders

Divide that number by whatever you think is a fair estimate of the average number of culture squares per city to get the number of cities.

Anything less than 35 squares per city would need more than 1,000 cities. Can you even have this many cities?

I don't think so. The city limit was raised from 256 to 512 or close to that. All Cities of all Civs.
Somewhere in a thread around here.
Earlier since many people started making a map that was 256 x 256 which I think is the largest size one can make.

Eugh, before starting a game like this, you might want to take some time off, like: a year

in 1.29 you could only have 512 cities. which was easily reachable in 256x maps, pangea, with landmass left over.

not sure if the limit has been increased
one would hope that it would, since the map size has been increased.

Is there anyway you can change the max cities?

Also, what is the point of having a maximum on cities allowed?

A map of size 362 x 362 yields only 362x181 tiles, 'cause of the very, hm, special construction of Civ-maps. If you ask me I liked the map of civ 1 much more. I don't really see any advantage in an isometric map for a game like civ3.

No the 512 is hard wired into the software.

The reason, as many people can attest to, for limiting the number of cities is the god-awful pace of games in the late stage.

Imagine building a few airports late in the game. The program goes through every city one at a time to note this new fact (same with harbors but they only affect coastal cities and most are built before you attain the 300+ city empire). It takes something like 4 minutes for the computer to respond when one of your cities actually builds an airport.

A single turn of building late in the game usually takes me 20- 40 minutes and that's with maybe 350-400 cities.

Imagine the boooooorrrreeeeddddoooooommmmmm (yawn) of waiting an hour or so just to complete your building phase...

Well, I can perfectly imagine WHY they did put the limit.
Though, I would like to be able to CHANGE this limit.

What about the computers we will have in 4 years ? If I wish to play on one of these number-crushing behemoth, and I find myself limited because of the limits of computers 4 years ago ?

Does that number remain unchanged in PTW?

So long...
