Direct IP isn't supported currently (coming in a patch soon, possibly the next one), however you *don't* need to use gamespy. You can connect through the Multiplayer menu in game even if Gamespy isn't installed on your computer. I don't know about port forwarding, but the ports you need to open for firewalls are listed.
