My experiences so far
PtW has finally reached Birmingham, and I now have it. Given the less than stellar reception others have given to PtW I decided that I would also post my thoughts.
Installation- crashed while trying to install game spy arcade.
Decided to go looking for the patch that I knew existed. Its interesting to note in this regard that I couldnt find any reference to 1.04 on the firaxis or infogreed websites on the obvious pages (although it must be said that I didnt scour their sites).
So far the experience is definitely an F-
I've kept the reciept for now.

The PTW 1.04 patch can be found in the Firaxis.com/downloads (not the Civ...com site).
I found this by going to the Apolyton Civ3 News (archives)

That's the weirdest thing so far....the Civ3.com site hasn't been updated for a while. It doesn't even mention the fact that PtW has been released
It was annoying, though, because in the Description for the DyP and AM mods, it says that the full version is available there
I found them, eventually (the authors sites were listed, although the one for AM was the wrong one), but it was still a little frustrating.

The websites are pathetically out of date.
Sure we can find the patch at apolyton, but for the unenlightened folk....
At least put the patch on civ3.com

Part duh!
Poly was having one of those "senior moments" when I started this thread so I didnt know it had been posted nor could I check for patch info. Thanks for that though.
To continue:
A quick google search and I got the patch from GamersHell
-no probs with installation.
I tried starting the game from the icon in the Civ3 folder
-I got a spinning disc icon then it stopped. I finally started the game directly from the disk. Now it starts from the icon?
I found the dinosaur units (eventually). I'm planning a "Godzilla" scenario.
I'm not ready for a MP game but lets continue on. Click on MP from main menu.
Away I went to gamespy- looks fine to my inexperienced (MP) eyes. There were a number of games available but only one with a sub 100 ping time. Is there no way to see how fast the other players are or how fast my times are (they should be very good)?
So far its a C score so I'll keep the receipt until I test some more.

BTW, you might want to update your sig
And if you're like me, you'll end up throwing out the receipt. Again, I admit my feelings

It's not a big deal for me, but why is there no icon on my desktop? I said I wanted one at the end of the installation. Plus, if I go through start->programs-> infogreed->PtW I get a startup to go to gamespy arcade? Is this a consequence of the installation hiccup? Shouldnt there be a startup for the game? Are the Firaxians getting back at me for my previous (one or two ) less than positive comments about CIV3?

I continue to have problems starting the game. Its starts, then hangs. Sometimes it can take three to four tries. This is crap
The game just crashed. A sound file seemed to do it in; the bong sound with diplomacy just kept repeating. This is crap and shouldnt EVER happen

I don't know, I have one. In fact, it actually starts when I choose it. It sounds like you had installation problems.

Thats really odd, did you try unistalling PtW, deleting the folder then reinstalling? Didn't have any of those problems but that really sounds like a fubar'd install.

Of course it was 'installation problems', thats kinda the point . I can fix em, the question is why should I have to? I cant think of any other game (that I own) that has required me to fix such a variety of problems related to installation. What about the people who dont know how to go about fixing game-related errors?
Although there are many other people who had lots of problems getting CIV3 to work, I was one of the lucky ones who installed patch after patch without a hiccup. So it seems strange to now encounter these kinds of problems with PtW. The only change to my OS is the upgrade to DX 8.1 from 8.0 (and I cant swear that I didnt have 8.1 before but it said I didnt during installation). Wasn't 8.1 required for CIV3? I think anyone who reads these threads is aware of the MP problems. But these kinds of glitches are not related to MP and shouldnt be happening a year after the release of CIV3.
PS, I had another crash I made the mistake of clicking on a worker after it said to "please wait'. Silly me!
PPS Kicking butt as the Ottomans (only on regent though). Kudos on the new espionage screen. :b

Yet another "how do I feel about the game" thread.
There are already enough threads to discuss your feeling toward the game, good or bad. Please find one of them to continue this discussion.
