My dinosaur:
Compaq Presario, 500MHz, 184 MB RAM, 7 GB HD
I usually play on a huge map with only 6 or 7 civs, and it works fine for me.

Works fine on standard maps and 8 civs. Don't know for huge maps and 16 civs 'cause I play with standard settings.

This thread is so old that in the meantime I have a Duron 1200 MHz Also, in my first post I forgot to write about the monitor: 17", 1024x768.
In a month or so I'll be back again to report a new video card

I have never lagged out on anything. I don't have enemy animations on, but everything just goes unit to unit with no lag in between. My system ( even before ) was sorta overkill for Civ3, but I play Battlefield 1942 now and that is a resource hog.

Run more virtual memory management in Windows. I upped my to the limit of about 1Gb less the swap file size for Windows to support it.
Although, my 500mH was fine for about 5 -6 Civ's, alas I needed a new computer, and ended up with a cheapie 1.8gH Celeron. Graphic card may help but I am using not the AGP port but a PCI Geforce type 2 MX/MX400 card. Might upgrade that, as the old ATI drivers for my old ATI card may have corrupted files in the game.
Running Windows 2000 Professional, now before Windows 98SE.
Still, it is working.

A few aspirin later, and you still are the game.
