Will a Future Patch Cause Problems?

In Civ3, could you could load a game that was created with an older version of the game? I don't remember.

What about PTW? When a new patch is realeased, will all the PBEM games still work?

In general, yes they will work.

However, some strange things can happen between versions, so it might be best to test and see if there are big differences before you continue an important game with a new version.

I think it is uncommon to have problems with games when updating though.

Firaxians have learned not to overhaul everything since 1.17 patch (and won't create more problems than they solve). I think they'll take care of the compatibility with older saves, but the PBEM guys should be a bit noisy on the issue, to be sure they don't overlook it.
