I haven't played with these settings yet, but I believe:
"Regicide" - if you capture the opponents king, all of his cities are destroyed and he's out of the game.
"Mass Regicide" - Is quite different. If you capture ANY of your opponent's cities, he is out of the game and his cities are destroyed.
It looks like you were playing Mass Regicide in your example. If you were playing Regicide, well, then you are lucky!
