A few things I wanted in the editor:
Ability to add new terrain.
Ability to reveal bits of the map to any Civ. (When making a scenario, e.g. your civ is in europe, and marko polo's view of the map to asia can be seen at the beginning of the scenario).
Abilitiy to add era's and everything that goes with an era. (change screen, new cities, capable of being before the ancient era and after the modern area. etc)
Ability to add events; this should be quite powerful, it should be able to interact with terrain, units, cities, wonders, etc, basically everything in the game. e.g. If I wanted everyone to start in the ice age, and play for 10,000 years, evenutally over a period of time I would want the ice to melt back and reveal the new lush terrain. Also what is needed is a pop-up box that will popup when you want it to. (And it must have its own interface graphics, so that it can be changed and not effect any of the other interfaces).
Ability to connect two or more scenario's back to back. So if you finished one scenario, you would immediatly begin the second scenario. E.g. If the victory condition was to build a spaceship and go to alpha centauri, then when you finish it, the next scenario will be to play in alpha centauri. (which is already pre-set up)
Ability to add new city types.
-------------------
The editor in PTW is good, but I think that's only because it's better than what we had before. It's STILL not really a scenario making machine. The addon to Civ2 was, why isn't Civ3?

What? No adding of era?
And this is PTW you're talking about?

PTW's editor is good but could use some more features. I really wanted the ability to add new eras and events.
All the things you mentioned would be great. I wonder if we can expect any of these things in a patch or another expansion. Hopefully a patch.

I think these addition would be great. What I most want is an event editor. Regardless if it is simple such as Civ 2 events or as complex as CTP 2 slic events. I am trying to make a Roman based scenario but the lack of events will make it very generic and it is hard to control the flow of the game.
To be honest though I don't think this will be realized until they drop their next addon in about a year.

Flat maps, objective points (sort of- not as it was in Civ 2), ability to set the time (down to weeks!), and ability to add an "end limit" through turns, points, or years stand out the most.
Regarding events: Unfortunately, due to the nature of the game you can't add events, however, you can change the text of the hard-coded events to give you alerts at points. If someone with more knowledge of the actual code of the game than me wanted to, I suppose the could find the trigger that determines the event being set off and monkey with that. It might even be possible to write it so that it's specific enough to act as a reactive event (if a unit is lost, or money is gained, or city is destroyed), but it still wouldn't have the functionality of the Civ 2 editor. I've got a few ideas along these lines, but I don't have the technical acumen necessary to follow through on them.
Regarding LOS/Marco Polo: outposts make a nice half-assed approach to dealing with this oversight.

You can have flat maps by turning off X-wrapping and Y-wrapping in the editor.
What I would really like to see is a screen that gives me all the vital map stats while I am in the editor, something like:
MAP=75% water
Resouces=
2 coal
2 iron
3 saltpeter
etc.
Luxuries=
1 gems
2 incense
2 ivory
etc.
Starting Locations=10
And of course the above mentioned abilities to add events, ability to set diplomacy at the beginning (allies, enemies, etc.).

I wouldn't mind buying it as an add on but I really don't want to wait another year for all this

Yes, I know. I was answering Saurus' question about what *is* in the editor.

Anyone ever try a map with Y-wrapping on? You'd have some extremely weird strategies. Remember the maps in Ultima that wrapped in both directions?

i mainly want
- diplomacy editing (incl. "no peace talks possible")
- make tech trading optional or come with a tech.
- more flexible choices (e.g. not +50% tax, but a field to enter amount)
- new terrains
- new worker actions (e.g. convert terrain A into terrain B)
- SCRIPTING (come on... it's not so difficult)

well, thats the problem with the 3rd game in a successfull series, they don't need the futures to make the game sell (just made a lot of friends with that comment )
but i too would absolutely LOVE those features..

I have been looking at the PTW editor some more and I really wish I could add more terrain types and name parts of the map, for example I want to be able to label Mt. Everest on the world map.
