Watch Out for ToE if you skip Nationalism
PTW changed how techs are awarded on the turn you complete ToE.
If you have timed your research to complete a tech and ToE on the same turn, the game no longer asks you what the first tech you want is. If you have skipped Nationalism, as many of us do, it first gives you Nationalism and then asks for the second tech. Goodby electronics when that happens.
This is based on one observation, but I think it is true.

Yes I skip it often, you can get by without riflemen If you do not draft and do not make RoP's or at least at that point. You are better off to get other things first. Of course some circumstances may preclude that.

I always find Im reaching nationalism just as Im bordering onto other civs. Defence is suddenly a priority.
Suppose it does indeed depend on circumstance, I always skip chivalry.

I find nationalism to be a neccessity, as the rifleman is extremely useful in blunting the cavalry units that become available just before nationalism.

I'm no expert, but in my experience, I can always count on at least 1 civ taking the Nationalism thread all the way to Communism, meaning I can buy that and beat the AI to ToE easily.
In fact, if you are playing against 2 or more Scientific Civs, what are the odds that neither of them will get Nationalism immediately? Or do they default to another tech?
At any rate, I'm with vmxa1 - I'd rather beeline for ToE and buy Nationalism after the price goes down - of course, if the situation is dire and you need the Riflemen, that's a tough call - could be expensive on the first couple of turns.

So, what we need to do is to be researching Atomic Energy on zero, I hope. If you have a "live" research project, the game probably won't default to Nationalism?

If you set up a tech queue, having Nationalisim or not shouldn't matter, the game should follow the queue.

Thanks for that idea. Blindingly obvious only after you mention it. Will give it a try soon It will still make it difficult to insert the corporation as the last tech before ToE is completed because that is not on the line to atomic energy.

Yes, if you have a tech queue set up it will follow the queue.
