we have 2 diplos on boats headed in there direction, the nearest will head directly to this city while the other keeps discovering new lands in the scearch for the Vikings. We are about 8 turns from getting the diplo there and then you may get you embassy my loyal foreign minister, unless the people vote against one.

because for some reason the boat that was exploring up there had no-one on board to make contact
rather than moving it back to our lands for 12 turns to pick up someone , I chose to keep exploring while sending diplos on other boats up that way as well.

Yes, embassy first, decisions afterwards. We shouldn't try to make serious decisions in the absence of information.

Since we're 8 turns away, the embassy is an obvious first step.
Atawa, perhaps you can explain the Key Civ Tech-Gifting concept to the class. It's tough to get your arms around a concept that "feels" like it reduces your tech leadership. Perhaps in a fresh thread...
Or maybe we can assign everyone homework in the Great Library...

If I understand the "Key Civ" concept correctly, then (to simply it greatly) our tech beaker cost is a ratio of the number of *our* techs to the number of the Key Civ's techs.
What a wierd and amazing idea!
So, since we are "Supreme", if we gift techs to the Purple civ, our tech beaker cost will be lowered. I'd summarize tech-gifting this way:
1A. If we have more techs than the Key civ, then our costs are higher than the average cost (for all civs).
1B. If our techs are the same number, we pay the average cost per tech.
1C. If our techs are fewer, then we pay a lower than average cost per tech.
2A. If our power rating changes, then we have a different Key Civ.
2B. Dropping one rating to "Mighty" would compare us to the Orange (Caths).
2C. Dropping 2 ratings to "Strong" would compare us to the Light Blue (Chinese). Not too bad...
3. Tech-gifting could be very advantageous to us, but we have to watch our power rating *very* carefully (having our Key Civ change to the Carths would be a disaster)!
I hope I got all that right!

I'm fascinated by the Key Civ idea, having only read about it recently. If we wanted to be very "manipulative" of the game, we could attack the Mongols, reduce them to a pitiful size, then make peace and keep gifting techs. Whilst I shall be trying this out VERY soon myself (being an extremely manipulative kinda guy), I'm not sure it would be in the spirit of this game .
Perhaps gift a few techs now, but keep a close eye on their progress - we don't want them to get out of hand.

Just give them all the techs that are widely spread across the globe allready.
We dont want to give them Nuclear Fision just to lower our beaker count now do we?

I agree, give it to them, only if the rest of the world has it.

Does our key-civ for tech gifting only depend on our power rating as Supreme? Would it change, or would the benefits of each tech gift change if Purple rises on the Powergraph as a result of tech-gifting?
It might be beneficial to crush the mongols once we have a good idea of military strength and reduce them to one city as suggested by Bruce. Then we can tech gift without fear of them catching up to us. It has always been my experience that the nation I make friends with always contends because I tend to share technologies with them and no one else.
It might also be prudent to cripple their tech research rates by tech gifting the key civ of Purple, although that is somewhat tricky as both civs will be shifting in the power rating unless severly confined by Apolyton.
Otherwise,
make peace and ship caravans to the Mongols.

As soon as President Hydey establishes an embassy with the Mongols (as he is already working on doing), we will know where we stand relative to them on numbers of techs. Then, we will know what we can gift to them that other civs already have (and would trade to them anyway soon enough).
