Trade 1650 AD - Cities Producing Caravans
How many of our cities should be producing Caravans? While they are undoubtedly valuable, they are not producing city structures with long-term benefits to Trade. I mean this as a separate question from the concerns of city-planner, just that trade can be increased in ways other than direct Caravans.
We currently have 9 of our 23 cities producing Caravans. Should we change that?

4 cities already have markets while another 7 are already in production, cities without should first get a couple of trade routes but as the vans ($) roll in the markets shall arrive very quickly soon after.

I think M. Niccolo has it right -- keep building camels, and use the GP generated by trade routes to fund the needed infrastructure -- markets, libraries, harbors, etc.

I concur. For the most part, keep building camels, with time out of production queues for needed infrastructure and the occasional new settler.

Cant really give an answer to the poll.
High trade city's should get 2-3 off shore traderoutes and then focus on building improvements.
High production city's should keep building caravans for wonderproduction.

Marketplaces in small cities aren't worth much - a 50% increase to very little, is still not a lot. Therefore I suggest cities of small size with a settler build camels whilst the settler does his stuff, then build Marketplaces (and Banks ) as the city grows to medium size, then camels again when the city has reached a good size, has good infrastructure and are starting to be limited on size by needs for specialists/elvii.
It doesn't really matter how many cities are producing camels if we're using them for Wonders, as we'll use them one way or another once built, for our long term benefit. I'm struggling against my dislike of using them for trade routes, as I realise we don't have any intention of nuking the cities we trade with out of existence .
If there's no immediate prospect of using the Camel for a Wonder , send it off for trade, but 1st priority should be Wonders.

Bruce, what do you mean by a small city? How else are
we going to go to WLtPD without a network of
marketplaces? I say build as many marketplaces as we can and recoup the build cost when our cities grow.
If we don't go to a Fundy gov't and rake in tithes,
the next best option is Caravan bombardment.
Focus on Marketplaces to help our cities grow from
WLtPD, and then switch to Caravans. After the caravan, and our cities are at least 5, build Libraries.
I usually disdain trade routes, but 230 gold and beakers
is a real haul at this point of the game.
Nuking trade cities produces pollution
Pollution = Global Warming without engineer corps
Global Warming + Coastal areas = Swamp
Swamps choke cities and trade.
Let's leave nukes alone for awhile.

I am glad you polled this Minister cavebear as it has recently been on my mind as well. (tho i was going to poll later,It may have been too late so your timing is good)
My idea was to finish the markets and banks in a huge improvement campaign. then to split up the production between caravans and improvements with one or two cities with good production building wonders. of 23 cities I think 9-10 building vans is good, not too many but not too littole and of course alternateing the cities.
Once I have my server at work fixed I can get teh save and post polls, my first attempt ended up in a partial download I am on the pc at my 2nd job now and had to "manage" the software a little to be able to just post in a forum. man they like thier security.
