do you play for the score???
its been my experience that i dont really ever play for the score. I like to play as long as i can and build up so i can actually win. Even if i go over the time limit i dont consider it a total loss. i can really draw out the game by a 256 square map. turn on the stagnant tech and get ready for a long game.

so what do you do.

Never really for the score, but mostly for Transcendance - thus having 100% of the techs + a few Thoughts. As soon as I built the Voice, I generally buy rapidly the Ascent a few turns after.
And I always play on average map: this is where you have to make a balance between facilities building AND military units. Close contacts and vendettas, but not too much like a tiny map. Playing on a huge map is too easy and boring : all you have to do is build ( you can be at vendetta with the AI many turns without being disturbed because of the distance between the empires, even after mid-game. Boring ).
So go for average map + Ascent, hybrid play ( build + conquest ), and forget the score.
