"Rugby is a game for hooligans played by gentlemen, whereas football is a game for gentlemen played by hooligans." - by someone.
Thats football where you mostly use your foot, to kick the ball.

Note the comma after "mostly use your foot", and i was seperating American "Football" (where they kick each other more than the ball), from real Football.

BTW, H Tower what do you think about the latest Superbowl final and the huge victory of the Tampa Bay Bucaneers?
I don't have the occasion to see many Football matches but this one was really surprising. Were the Oakland Raiders on a bad day (and especially their Quaterback) or have they been really disturbed by a superb defense from the Bucaneers?

The TB coach was with the Raiders last year... so that may have helped. But Gannon (the Raiders QB) was up against the best defense in the NFL and the AFC defenses don't have anything near the skill of the Bucs defense. I was surprised though that the Raiders looked shocking on SuperBowl Sunday, so it's a combination of a bad day and being outclassed by the Bucs, IMO.
This is highlighted by the fact the Bucs defense outscored the Raiders offense.
The SuperBowl this year sucked, but you get one like it every few years...
The real SuperBowl was the NFC Championship match (Philadelphia Eagles vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
I'd like to see H Tower explain why the Bears sucked this year

Thanks for the comments Frozzy. This game was supposed to oppose the best attack to the best defense.
The Bucaneers displayed actually the best defense and the best attack in front of disoriented Raiders.
I wish I could see more Football games but the coverage is really weak in France.
BTW Frozzy, we haven't seen you at the Rugby thread yet.

Still the game did boil down to 2 or 3 interceptions that were run in by the bucs defense. Any team that made those mistakes was going to be facing an uphill struggle.
God knows what happened to Gannon - he just stopped being that great quarterback for the most important game of the year?
Still i like Iskallins 'norse-rules' rugby best - if i'm not a crippled old man(tm) by the time i get around to visiting Iceland i'll give it a go

Let them play some Civ3 games, when they will feel the need to play a real strategy game they will come here.

I hate the bucs, I always have, but I especially hate Warren Sapp. Needless to say I was dissapointed with how the game was played, but the raiders didn't come prepared to play, and the bucs did, so I have to tip my hat to tampa.

All I really need is two words: John Shoop
If you want more detail than that, how about losing half of the defensive secondary. Having both defensive ends injured most of the season didn't help either. But if I had to name one play that killed the Bears season it was when Leon Johnson let the kickoff hit him in the facemask and allowing the other team to recover it. The whole season slid from there. Last year the Bears got really lucky, this year we had injuries, our offense still sucked, oh yeah, we lost an all pro linemen, so we had a bad O-line defending two old unable to roll out quarterbacks, so we ended up with Henry Burris, the third stringer playing. Jerry Angelo said in the begining of the year that a third stringer wasn't important, so he got a nobody to fill the position. Do you need more details?

I actually agree with most of it... and the Bears really screwed up their draft picks with those late wins. Congrats
I think Angelo screwed up the team before the season started, and quite frankly the Bears' couldn't get a good QB for 2002/2003 if their life depended on it.
As for defense... I won't even go there

Do you mean the Raiders thought they would easily slaughter the Buccaneers and thus have not prepared the match adequately?

not exactly, the superbowl is a special kind of game, and it takes a special level of preperation. I'm not talking practice, I mean getting pumped up. I know the Bucs were pumped, they rode that paper champions thing of the steelers game all the way to the winners circle. For sure the raiders center didn't get pumped up for the game, he went down to Tijuana instead and had himself a grand old time.

I see, this is a bit like our Rugby championship in France:
1st phase: qualification games, two 8 teams pools
2nd phase: play-offs
3rd phase: 1/4 th final, 1/2 final and final at the Stade de France in june.
The teams must undertake a special preparation all around the year and be prepared to be at their maximum power for the 2nd and 3rd phases.

The NFL is slightly different...
The NFL is divided into the AFC and NFC sections.
Each section has 4 divisions of 4 teams (North, South, East and West)
Every one plays each other in they're section once (IIRC) over 17 weeks.
After this, the top team from each division, plus the next best two teams, go through to their "Sectional" play-offs. "Seeds" 1 and 2 make the semi-finals automatically, and seeds 3-6 play in "Wild Card Week". The winners of WCW play seeds 1 and 2 in the semi finals. The two winners of the semi-finals play in the "Championship Match".
Then the winners of the AFC and the NFC sections play eachother in the SuperBowl to decide the NFL champions.
