How long have your MoM games lasted
in game time, I mean.
I currently have a game running which is into the 1460s, and have a ways to go. mostly because i don't want to win by spell of mastery.
i suppose it might be possible to keep a balance of power for a long time, and just spell blast anyone who tries to cast spell of mastery.
If I did that, does the game have its own limitations? I remember in Santa Paravia, if you played too long, you ruler would die of old age....

How can you tell what date it is?
I've never noticed.

@ Angband avatar!
I think you can see it in a corner of the "powergraph" screen, either F4 or F5, and it's expressed in month & year, starting form around 1400 IIRC.
Thus 1460 could be roughly 12*60=720 turns?

I'm pretty sure the date is listed under both historian and astrologer.
yep, 1460 would come to 720 turns....

Cheers. (Nethack actually, but could have been either)
It's funny about this time thing. I used to be religious about observing the game date in Civ, but never care about it in SMAC and MoM.

Ok, I finished that game in june, 1485 (whew!)
it just gets boring if you keep going too long. all my 98 cities were built up and at full population. just said to hell with it and cast spell of mastery....

somehow I never cared about the MoM date either. Just about not being behind the AI on researching that Spell Of Mastery.
I really hate when they do it first..grrrr

Huh? In my experience, winning by Spell of Mastery takes MUCH longer than winning by conquest. Of the hundreds of games I've played, I think there might have been one where I finished casting SofM. All my other wins have been by conquest, and half the time I never even got starting researching the spell before the last enemy wizard fell.

well, try increasing the difficult level, they you should see it more often. Conquering an enemy wizard is a pestilence on impossible.

I don't think I've ever cast SoM out of necessity (and I do play on impossible when I want a real challenge). OTOH I haven't played MoM quite some time (though I had a lot of fun with it at the time)

Well, I would disagree with you here. Even on impossible, things are usually pretty easy once you have built a few powerful stacks or got good heroes.
I think most games lasted until around 1450, and I never got in the 1500's.
