PtW ISSUES
Okay...I got the XP....I got the patch. I expected - oh I don't know - A GAME THAT WORKED!? I haven't even gotten to the game to experience the crash bugs because I don't seem to get any sound IN THE INTRO. When I play the regular game the sound works fine...and I have the latest versions of my sound card drivers. Is it too much to expect that when you buy a product...IT WORKS? PLease join me in letting the wonderful people at Firaxis and Infogrames know they owe us all a game that works or a refund.
Thanks for listening.

Works fine for me, and can even add a line to the ptw.ini file that does not play the opening intro movie stuff.
Uses a different bink32.dll file, so maybe the old one would work better for your system, don't know if it can be done that way, but
in ini file for Play the World
PlayIntro = 0
I think.
Its in the readme, although I have not tried multiplayer yet!

Send it back for a full refund like it says in the readme.
BTW, this works fine for me.

It works for me. I'm in five email games on two different forums. My email program (Outlook 2000) is giving me fits, but Civ3PTW is working great.

Works fine for me too.
Trade it in or simply return it, I guess.
This is on the assumption that your video and audio drivers are the latest versions and that your system meets the minimum spec, of course.

Re: PtW ISSUES
Jeez! I haven't even been to this site since before PTW came out. But it looks like with Firaxis the more things change the more things sadly remain the same! Or perhaps I am too harsh as some people have it working.

Oh, I don't think you are - it should have become corporate standard that game makers drive around and help everybody install games, configure various sound cards, networking cards, etc.
It's only fair - after all they can't really expect us to know what's going on with the PC, can they?

Not sure how it relates to Firaxis or any compnay with so many have not see the problem and a few have? I see this with many games on many sytems. Someone can't get it running and a ton of people can, what should I conclude?

Well, the game works in XP for me too BUT the last 3 times I've played the game, it has crashed after some turns. I didn't have auto-save turned on the first time around and lost a few turns worth of moves. I was so pissed when the game crashed but I couldn't stay away too long since I had to teach Persia a lesson for declaring war on me.

The game or the system does have bugs and will hang on occasions. I have seen that with game like Moo that I have played on a lot of pc's and so many hundreds of times, but they will lock up at times. That is different than not even being able to install or fire up. If only a few see this, it is likely a configuration issue.

Hey, the systems works fine....I've been playing Civ3 for months with noooo problems. Sound and video drivers are up to date and work fine for Civ3 but not for PtW. Did you notice they have a patch out for PtW ALREADY! I just think they should have worked out the bugs before releasing it for sale (just a sound business practice IMHO).

I just think you should go read some other "PtW sucks... for me" threads.
And you should learn a bit about software development.
There's no such thing as a 100% bug-free Computer Program.

I occasionally have problems getting PtW to run. The spinning-CD continues for awhile and then nothing -- back to the desktop. So far (since reformatting the hard drive), if it won't start then I can re-insert the CD and get the game started by starting it from either the autoplay or normally. Once one of those ways didn't work and I had to do the other to get it going.

@Jaybe:
That could be a problem with the game's Copy protection scheme. Check out this Troubleshooting guide from Infogrames support.
You may also get some help from the general Infogrames PtW support page.
I had the problem you experience now with Civ3 (which used a different copy protection scheme) and it's usually due to a problem with a CD-RW drive it seems, but you'll probably know more once you've been through the troubleshooter - if not, then write Infogrames a letter so they'll know more
@DarwintheGreat:
The fact that you run Civ3 doesn't mean that your system runs fine. It just means that your system isn't so buggy it prevents Civ3 from running
PtW might just be plain old Civ3 to you, but it's a totally different game to your computer, using many different system drivers, depending on various other parts of your system for stability, requiring more computer power and generally speaking : If you asked your computer whether Civ3 and PtW was the same thing, it would shout No so loud you wouldn't be able to hear the sounds in PtW.
...but then I guess that was your problem already , so maybe you need to listen to your computer and start treating PtW as a different program than Civ3. The fact that a computer runs Windows95, doesn't necessarily mean it will also run Windows98, WindowsME or WindowsXP

bigfree1, it is just that most of us have heard it all way too many times. It is not a question of the statementts being valid or not. After the first 100 times someone tells you you have a broken window, you are no longer glad to hear about it. It is even worse here as the people trying to tell us about the window can plainly see we have be told about it already.

Not to mention that a lot of people here also think that if you throw a rock at the window, and it breaks, then it's the window company's fault.
Now, maybe the window would be a bit more sturdy, but they had to ship it early to meet the demands of Home Depot.

True, very true.
Btw, the game crashes sometimes, and my computer is up to date. So what? Turn on the auto save and go ahead, enjoy the new civs. After all, it's a great game!
