I think the inherent flippancy of the remark was obvious. If it wasn't I would like to inform all members of 'Poly that I do not know anything about Sid's personal life, and all comments in this area should be taken as mere speculation.

Yes, but they can also detract from punchiness. Think of it as deadpan, but in post form.

half of a good joke in "real life" is the tone of the voice and the expression of the face.

smilies play that part. if you were to go to Sid and say what you said with a deadpan, he'd probably hit you in the face and be right about it

Well obviously I wouldn't make such a crack in real life unless I knew the person well. And postulating such a level of familiarity I would alternate between making the joke (or similar jokes) with a smile and a laugh, or making the joke deadpan, depending on my mood.

well we are mainly between strangers here. it's by default assumed that using no smilies means that you're either serious about what you said or certainly not joking about it

Well if the remark was about another poster I'd agree. But it wasn't, and, what is more, it was manifestly obvious it was not intended as a serious comment.

It was only Panag, and he isn't exactly credibility incarnate. But point taken, I wont imply anything about Sid's sexual practices in future without smiling.

Flippant remarks are for the OT. They are less 'religous' there and can take jokes, and even if its not seen as a joke no worries - truth is unimportant and trolls common.

If you are joking, a smilie is important. The number of overly sarcastic posts I've made that have resulted in a flamings due to American's sarcasm detectors malfunctioning is unbelievable.

As I said, the point is taken. I still believe though, that even Americans wouldn't think:

a) Sid was having an affair with the wife of the CEO of EA.

b) He told me about it.

c) I would post it here.

All of which would have to be true for it not to be a flippant remark.

You'd think so wouldn't you.

But then you wouldn't expect 11% of them not to know where their country is on a map.

I admire how you maintain your persona......very diligent.....I hope you have a nice day too.

So the topic: price of PTW in Germany. Well due to bugs you can't even get it in the UK yet. I think it is the same across much of Europe.

Well, I never thought that DrSpike's comments were true, even without a smilie. After all, the whole idea has a low credibility. Sid? He's not the sexiest guy in the world...

Back on topic: I recently found out that PTW will probably cost R$ 60,00 (sixty reais), which is roughly equal to US$ 16,85. Now, this value may seem low for a lot of you, but, actually, R$ 60,00 is a lot of money around here, especially for an expansion pack (compare this to the price they are charging for The Sims XPs: R$ 45,00 (approx. US$ 12,64).

But I bet that this price will drop very soon.

I am not sure if this happens only in Germany but on Amazon.de they now have dropped the price to €32.99!

I'll just sit tight and wait 'til the dust settles and I'll buy at €30 or less.

So long...
