26 hours 30 minutes ... Holy $#|*
Ok, So there's a new 'feature' in ptw that some may have noticed,
when you finish a game, it tells you how much time you've used. So my first PTW game (std world size, random everything, Monarch) ends (with my victory by domination) and this stat comes up 26hours and change!!!!
So the question is, how do I get a satisfying game without all that time. i figure i spent most of it moving artillary, cavalry and tanks around. How much fun is that?
So, what settings, modifications to rules etc etc to shorten the overall gametime without impacting strategic play?
BTW, I like having at least 8 civs for the chaos effect, so thats my one rule, at least 8 civs...
regards

play on small or normal maps with no island...
Or Continent can be fun... with continent this can take like 8-9 hours even less for me. To be beat or beat the computer..in Monarch

When you're imagining all the damage you're about to do with those units it can be quite fun. I love that clock though. 17h, 48m, 8s for my first game. It helps you understand the opportunity cost of an addiction like Civ.

I love this feature and it is key to shortening the game time.
I dont want to shorten my games to much though because the fun of civ is taking the time to command an entire empire and get things right.

Thats fast! By my standards anyway! hahah
I like to dominate the entire planet and leave the each AI civ with 2-3 cities and laugh as they try to send settlers out to expand out of my cities which surround them....they are land locked by the way.
Before attacking their last city, whereever it is, I would give them 2-3 cities as a tribute and exchange for peace. THese citise would be surrounded by my cities and there is no way for them to expand or attack their way out as they are too weakkkkk......
Then I would declare war and wipe out their last city leaving them imprisoned in the few cities I have given them.
I think of it as collecting species or civs......like some demented alien race......bwaaahahhaha....
By trying to achieve these goals I average more than 100 hours a game on giant maps.....

Just finished by 1st PTW game, and I clocked in at 81 hours on a large, large-continent map. But I don't go in for all that governor/automation stuff. If I don't micromanage it, it doesn't get done the way I want it.
EDIT: typo.

I wonder how the time is counted. I mean I sometimes leave the game up sitting there waiting for my next move while leave the house.

26 hours would not be a lot for me but I'll be on the lookout to see how much time I spent on my games . I usually take my time with the game and that probably means lots of hours...
So long...

Did you notice those 26 hours passing by? If you did not, then you were having fun...
But small or standard maps, no islands, and accelerated production, plus some automation (governors in some places, workers automated, rally points) might do the trick for you.
I prefer loooong and detailed games, but YMMV.

Why should there be an option to turn this off? Does it bother you to know how much time you spend playing a game?

Well, it's already there, and there is other stuff that is far more important than putting in an option to turn it off.

This is the problem, while I'm moving all the military units about, and the bombardment takes soo long, it's not fun... Maybe I should turn off the animation...
But I do like the strategic planning part, but not so much the city managing, stupid stuff like when your fp city doesn't have enough tiles to work because the neighboring cities are using some of the good ones...
The other thing I was mulling, and am now putting into a mod is to make the military units 2x as expensive with 2x the hit points. I don't know what this will do to the AI but I'll see. I've also thought about making armies available from the get-go, but I haven't done it yet...

Yes, turning off animations is good.
In warfare, if you are concerned, turn battle animations back on so you can keep track of what the enemy does just before you end each turn.

That's pretty much the game, isn't it?
If you are not enjoying it, turn the computer off, wash the dishes, take out the garbage, do the laundry, scrub out the tub AND the toilet, change the cat litter, etc. You know: REAL LIFE!
After that, moving your units will seem a lot more fun!

Well, there's always peacetime: cleaning pollution, correcting the governors' production choices, confirming city worker allocations and ending the turn.

Well, I was going to add this as well, but I didn't want to rant...
But I know there's a fun game in there somewhere...
