Your thoughts on fortifying units, please
One thing I just don't quite have a handle on. When do you fortify your warriors, impis, etc? And if you are on an island and there is nothing left to explore, what do you do with your scout? Fortify him?

I'm playing Zulus, it's early in the game. I have two cities, and they have gotten granary, barracks, temple, and lots of impis and warriors. The whole island has been explored.

Barbarians appear from time to time requiring military action on my part.

But other than dealing with barbs, what do I do with my military or scouts while I am waiting on Map Making etc to get off this island? Is there a special place I should fortify them? Or do I just keeping moving them around?

Do I just fortify them in the city?

Yes, and put them on coastal high ground looking out for gallies.
Fortify them anywhere (taking into account military police roles).

hi ,

send your units that you dont need , or / and are outdated to far away cities to be disbanded , it shall save you money , and the building or new unit shall be build faster , keep only like one scout , get rid of the rest

barbarians are good to get elite status for your units !

have a nice day

I would definitely sentry some of your warriors in the undeveloped areas where barbarian colonies are going to be popping up so you can go crush them as soon as they appear rather than waiting for them to crawl out of the woodwork and start pillaging your improvements and killing your workers. This also gives you a heads up if AI's start sneaking into those areas to build their own cities. As for your scout, I guess the best thing is to let him nap until you get some boats built.

Disband the scouts they wont be needed for a while, or might not be needed again. Miltary units can be used for MPs, upgrading, disbanding for shields, or barbarian harvesting, whichever is you preference/need at the time.

If youre the only one on your island make some more settlers and build cities to cover the whole area before the AI do. This will also stop the barbarians.

Thanks guys, for the help.

Another question related to this: Is fortify the same thing as sentry?

With Sentry your units will wake up when another unit (friend or enemy) appears.

So looks like putting the military units on sentry would be better than fortifying them.

Sometimes, it would.

If I'm alone on an island, I like to keep only a small group of wandering military units to take care of the barbs. I rarely fortify them, and I almost never put them on sentry duty. But if there is an AI civ next, I look for choke points where I can fortify my units and some other places where I want them to be on sentry.

I think that fortified units gain a small defense bonus, on top of the defense bonus of the terrain where they stand. Am I right?

Yes, I think they get 50% bonus on defense (Or is it 25%?)

In Civ3, press "print screen"
In a graphic editing software (I suggest Paint Shop Pro), press ctrl+V.
Resize the image it created to be at most 800 pixels wide, and save it as a jpg or jpeg.

In the forum, when writing a post, click browse before you post your new message, and attach your picture

for non-combat units and outdated units (swordsmen...) - you can disband them...

aaglo , minor detail but if you disband units in cities producing wonders the shields will be wasted.

BTW, checked the readme.txt yesterday, the sentry command was added in patch 1.17f. Explains why I thought it was gone.
