Cannon folder nostalgia
Any cannon fodder memories? Perhaps the euphoria you felt when completing the hard one in mission 8, or the first time you manage to blow the door off the central building in 12-6.
Or the pain of losing Jools and Jops when you had spent countless hours trying to keep them alive till they reached the highest rank.
Or the fun in leaving your guy in a turret on auto whilst you went off for your tea, to come back an hour later and find he had like a billion kills.
Oh, and the theme tune.
Classic.

I always found the hill filling with crosses very poignant, even as at the same time i was happy to see the new recruits trundle over the hill ready for new adventure.......to become one more cross

Oh yeah...it gave a great "something" to the game
Just hearing the name, gives me some nice memories (Like the day I just bought Cannon Fodder, Cannon Fodder 2 was about to be released )

War has only been this much fun once before!
Bloody hard CF2, though I eventually battled through to the end.

How about the one in mission 18 where you run out of missiles in the chopper and have to entice the rival chopper to land so you can grenade it.......that was annoying.

Oh yeah... the first time I tried to drive around, with one of those vehicles... for some strange reason, my soldiers didn't survive (the one driving and those he drove into (and exploded near by ))

Yeah the vehicles exploding killing all your men could be very frsutrating.....especially since the game was a little buggy and sometimes the collision detection was.........erratic.

I have to bump this thread (Spike told me to )
So *bump*
I'm only doing this because it was such a wonderful game in every way. Even the mission titles were "Super Smashing Namtastic"
Does anyone have a favorite mission? My top three were:
1. Jeep Jump
2. My Beautiful Skidoo
3. Round and Round the Garden.
I just loved the silly driving over people aspect of these missions, the fact that you had to pile all your soldiers into one car and plummet over a cliff to win (?!?!) Madness.
And then the music when you won. I don't suppose anyone has this on mp3 ?

Hehe glad you found it.
I remember Jeep Jump, that was a classic. I don't remember all the names but:
1) 12 - 6.....the one where you had to get one guy on each of the 3 circles *without* losing any of them when you left them alone. Then you got the helicopter and the mission was pretty much done, though you still had to figure out how to blast the door off of the main building.
2) 10 -5, which IIRC correctly was called, "if it moves kill it". If you did everything right you finished it in about 15 seconds.....but it needed a few goes. As soon as you spawned you got shot at by tanks, bazookas and normal fire.
3) 8-4, the first level that required any skill.......many deaths here before working out how to do it.
Later on there were also some great levels. 18-5 was brilliant, and the short one with the 'Give us 10p mate' guys was really cool.
Great game.

It might be best not to.........your standards have risen now, and old games always look dire when you view them from a modern perspective. Let your memories lie.

O.K, probably I can't take it. I got my 2+Ghz machine recently, and now I find everything a bit slow. I would probably die using my Amiga. And I'd have to tune the TV to the right channel again... its too much bother. You've talked me out of it.
But, where can I get a game that good these days? If only games designers knew what we really wanted.
I propose Cannon Fodder 2003, with full 3D graphics, big explosions, and adult/obscure humor. Filled with references to trout masks or something... I'd buy it for sure, as long as the actual game stayed as click, shoot, die, laugh, try again.
And they would have to keep all the dumb names for the recruits. I loved the way they came in "theme groups". Zippy, Bungle & George were a fav. squad of mine.

I'd sure like to play that one too
Many of the old classic, would be nice to have in a new version (with better graphics, but gameplay about the same)
If I just knew programming good enough, I'd start making those myself

The thing is it was always the gameplay that counted most then. Now the focus is on prettification and nice 3d graphics. CF is not a game that would work in 3D. It is a shame for genres to all but die just because they cannot take advantage of new developments, when the underlying gameplay does not rely on those developments. The relative demise of graphical adventures are a notable example of this phenomenon IMO.

IMHO the graphics would HAVE to be better, or no-one would buy it. There's very few games that are made for free these days. As for CF in full, 3D, why not ? I think it would be great, with basically the same controls, but also a zoom, pan and rotate, to see behind buildings etc...
I'm a-dreamin, of course.

The modern interpretation of Cannon Fodder is the Commandos genre.
