Well.... This sucks!
I create this huge map game and get a great starting position. I play along for quite a while and get my first ring finished and find several new techs in goody huts. Whe I run into the civ next to me. By this time im 20 min into this game and things are going great.
The civ is the same color as I am. I can't tell his guys from mine.
I continue to play for the next 20 min or so with the feeble hope I can figure out a way to play this great game I have going even though his border and mine are getting close and things are not looking good for the future of the game.
I decided to wipe him out so I would not have to put up with the problem, but after I started the battle his troops and my troops could not be told apart and I ended up quitting in disgust.
(sigh)

I see this quite often since PTW on std maps. Too many civs and not enough color seperation. I have suggested stripped color disk, instead of just solid to make it plain to see.

Try toggling the color blind button in the preferences menu. I am not sure if this will help with your troops though.

"His guys are the ones that attack you."
Hehe... Yea, I figured that out.
The color blind switch is one fix I did not try. If it ever happens to me again I will give it a shot.

Seriously though, it does seem pretty sloppy. Does it happen regularly?

Maybe very simple: let us change colors
You'd like this civ to be pink? Np.
But if you find a way where you don't have to tweak anything, better.

What exactly does the colorblind option do?
And what are the new colors added to PTW?

do you use the color disk under (around) the unit?
In any case I say just wipe out the civ. Problem solved. You know which unit is yours because it is flashing. Just try to remember where you placed your own units so you don't make mistakes and move onto your unit thinking you are attacking.

Right click on any questionable unit. That will tell you whether freind or foe.
Friends will say 'Activate...' or Wake.
Foes will say 'Contact...'.
I've been confused a few times while playing Rome next to Japanese with their alternate colour.

Although it is very easy to miss what units are yours and what aren't. A lone enemy could sneak through your empire and strike a weak city, and you wouldn't be able to stop it as you wouldn't realize that unit wasn't yours.

I'm also wondering what the color blind thing does.

That is what happened to me. I know it was my own fault, but all of a sudden I saw the horsemen heading for a worker a few cities back. It had not attacked any cities or pillage so I did not notice the color was not exactly the same, but close. No damage, but I can see how something ugly could happen.
