Civ3, though if you can get another game, I'd recommend Tropico.

I'm a Civ-3 rejectionist, so I would suggest:
Hearts of Iron if you like WW II and/or Europa Universalis
MoO3 if it gets released in time
RCT2 if you're still enyoying RCT since its more of the same.
A good RPG: Morrowind, Wizardry 8
anything else except Civ 3

There's a small game I keep going back to no matter what: Space Empires IV. It's only available to buy from Shrapnel.com but don't let that put you off. It's definitely my recommendation.

Space empires IV (SE4) i a 4X TBS game in spcae, kind of like moo2 is. It has a very active community on their forums ( http://216.167.123.13/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=forum;f=23). It is by far the most moddable game i've ever seen. The stock singleplayer game is a bit lacking IMO, the AI isn't the sharpest knife in the book
But those things can be fixed by installing some fan made mods, or by making your own mod.
Don't expect any fancy 3d graphics though, but EVERY picture, every background, every color in the game can be changed, which is kinda neat if you got any artistic skills (unfortunately, i don't have any).

Check out online reviews of games. This way you can see if the format of the game appeals to you, and whether the game is highly regarded or not.

Civ 3 for sure if you don't have it, but PtW has left me disappointed somewhat.
Age of Mythology is this year's best release.

Here are a list of games I currently play that I like and enjoy on a regular basis (and I sorted them too!!).
First Person Shooters:
Quake III: Arena
AL|ENS v. Predator: Gold Edition
Mech Warrior 4
RPG:
TESIII: Morrowind (AND Tribunal!)
RTS:
SW: Force Commander
SW: Rebellion (Semi RTS really)
Total Annihilation: Core Contingincy
Adventure/Puzzle:
Grim Fandango
The Dig
Some or most of these games you'll need to goto the internet to buy. As you can see, I'm picky with my games so most of them are older. Be glade I only added one DOS game to that list.

None, I've still got some games in my collection I want to finish first. Thief and Longest Journey for instance. Besides, within a year most of those titles mentioned here end up in the bargain bin for a tenner. Plus there are lots of enjoyable OS/freeware games out there if you know where to look. So no games for me the coming year...

Yeah, so should I really get Morrowind? I'm currently considering that one as my next game purchase.

Well I hated Morrowind because of its interface. Neverwinter Nights is better.

Having played quite a few adventure thru the years I'm a bit jaded to answer that question. The start is a bit slow with lots of dialogue and some simple (well, at least for me) puzzles but the story manages to go beyond the "visitor with a mission in an alien world"- cliche. The fact that you play a believable female character also helps you get in the mood. It's quite large, spread over 4 CD's in fact.
Longest Journey gets my sign of approval: nice and enjoyable once you get going
