Why are the Celts so close behind us on the Powergrph?
No, it's not a poll, I'm just trying to figure out what is in their favor. We are first in almost all the vital categories, yet the Celts almost caught us (and only didn't because of the WLTPD celebrations, I assume).
We have 50% more cities, are a Democracy while they are only a Republic, and are 1st in Pop, Income, GNP, Mfg Goods, Productivity, and Approval Rating.
So what have they got that we don't have? Well, we only have 5 Libraries (64% Literacy) and the Celts are at 80%, so maybe that is part of it. They do seem to have a lot of techs. They have a slight edge on us in lower disease and higher life expectancy, but not by much.
Maybe they have a lot of over-rated medieval military units. Still, it seems to me that we should be further ahead of them. Is there something I'm missing?

They are not even close to us on PG but about halfway between us and China.
And the Chinese empire is kinda pathetic

We had very few happy people then, they have more impact on PG then content ones.
And wasn't that the period where we gifted a lot of tech to Mongols? Celts would have got it from GL.

It is kind of hard to tell what has been going on, since, for the first time in either game that I can recall, the President has not posted a year-by-year account of what happened during a session. And I note that the session lasted 15 turns of play, much longer than usual.
I want to know what occured during those years!

This President (well, hopefully ) will be sure to keep the people informed, unlike his predecessor.

They have alot of techs due to the great library which gave them all the techs we gave to the Mongols as per Cavebears instuctions (he said the people wanted this)

Yes, the Citizens *did* vote to try out the Key Civ idea. But the Mongols also have all those same techs now, and they are not close to us (or the Celts). It has to be more than just the techs.

they did have a higher population than us until WLTHD took over
Before the end of December I would expect WLTDED to have an even greater effect.

That would definitely be worth considering if/when our 1st choice tech path doesn't come up on a particular discovery.

Did some research of my own questions on the effect of Banks/Stock Exchanges and the amount that each tech affects tech gifting.
I was wrong that Banks/Stock Exchanges do not contribute to luxuries. They do, as listed in the manual.
I tend not to build them until late because they are expensive and with low taxes, do not contribute economically.
As for tech gifting:
This is what I did. I was playing a game, conquered the world and created a zoo city of purple, my key civ. Our tech difference was 8 techs. At this point I cheated, and looked at my beaker progress, which gives you your total beakers required to progress to the next tech. After each tech I gifted, I checked the beaker count.
Total beaker count depends on several things:
1. Number of total techs you have. Each tech increases the cost of the next tech.
2. The differential between your techs and those of your key civ, in my case this was purple.
When you have the same amount of techs as your opponent, your beaker count will reflect only the normal beaker count for each technology. In my case, I noticed each tech gift reducing my beaker count by about 50.
Since the first techs of the game do not cost 50 beakers, my new hypothesis is that this number depends on your total techs. The more techs you have, the more total beakers will be saved, but I do not know if this is a fixed percentage of your normal beaker cost, or if this varies as well. If it is a fixed percentage, it will be less than 5% of your total beaker counts per technology, as my beaker count was 1550.
Still, this reduction is significant, because each tech gift will reduce the cost of each subsequent tech researched!

PG is so lame..... all that map represents as the game advances is a tiny portion of the eventual pg...nothing to fear here
