[How to] Musical Control Panel
If you didn't know, you can do a bunch of cool things with your Apolyton notepad. I managed to set it up so that my control panel plays the Benny Hill theme any time I use it. I'm sure you're dying to know how exactly to do this as well. It's incredibly easy:
Simply put the following in your notepad:
PHP Code:
|
<embed src="stick an address here" loop="true" height=0 width=0>
|
Just replace the "stick address here" with the address to any sound file (wav, midi, or mp3), and save your notepad. Your control panel should now automatically play music.*

Hi there --
Curious if you'd be able to kindly take out that link, by chance. That midi in question happens to be hosted on my webspace, and bandwidth doesn't really come cheap these days.
This is definitely a neat idea, actually, but if you're going to do it, please make sure you've got the sound file hosted on your own webspace.
Thanks much...

It would be a good idea to change the address, Ix.

He probably checked the referrer logs for the spike in traffic.

Well, anything that is posted here seems to create extra traffic. Especially the trick by Markos to get people to the web based chatroom with the topic "See Anna Kournikova naked, get instructions here."

Why would I want a musical control panel? I already play my own music when I'm surfing on Poly.
EDIT: I mean, I play my favorite CDs and MP3s.

Actually, if you have the file on your HD, it still works-- just get the path right.

Hahaha.
I noticed my logs showing the Benny Hill theme being referred by user control panels on a web forum, and thought, "huh?"
Anyways, it's cool, and thanks for taking care of that. I turned referrer checking on for most of my site so it probably wouldn't work now anyways.
But, as a previous poster did say, you can use a "file://c/whatever/bennyhill.mid" link too, and that'd also work.

erm .... guys?
what if some amazingly stupid person tried to do this, but mis-typed the path name and so when he opens his control panel he gets an error pop-up telling him he's a **** and the embedded code doesn't appear in the notepad when he tries to edit it?
has this fool just completely FUBARed his control panel? is there a way to view the embedded code and delete it?
erm ... I'm just asking this out of curiousity .... purely hypothetically you understand ....

Just go back to edit your notepad, and the code should be stored in an entry, where you can edit it.

Hypothetically I'd suggest a self-adminstered beating with any heavy objects that may be to hand.

Wow. That's really bizarre. So you get an error popup in your control panel now? I haven't had any problems with it, but I'll see if I can't manage to break my control panel while fooling around with it some more. That reminds me, it's time for ANOTHER COOL CP CUSTOMIZATION* by ixnay37:
You can set any image to be the background image in your control panel! Simply stick the following in a notepad entry:
PHP Code:
|
<BODY BACKGROUND="path to your file goes here">
|
where you stick the path to an image file in between the quotes. I've got a spiffy little gradient that really makes the cp look cool:

rebooting my computer seems to have fixed it. it was giving me an error message before, but it isn't now.
the embedded code is still invisible, although perhaps it isn't even there anymore.
it's twilight zone time.
ixnay: that gradient is cool.

what else can we use the html tags for?
do the font, size and alignment tags work?
EDIT: no, they just change the format of the notepad entry. i wonder why the background tag effects the CP while these other ones only effect the notepad?

Time for more cool stuff*: DHTML filters! These will slow down your control panel, so it's not reccomended that you actually use them. But some of them do look pretty cool. To use them, simply place them inside a BODY tag (like the background in my previous post). You can mess around with the values and such to edit some of the effects. Here are a few:
style="filter:alpha(opacity=85,style=2)"
Fades out the edges of the screen for a frosted effect
style="filter:blur(direction=270,strength=20)"
Applies a motion blur to your CP in the direction specified
style="filter:xray"
Messes with the colors for an x-ray effect
style="filter:fliph"
Flips your CP horizontally, making it hard to navigate.
style="filter:flipv"
Flips your CP vertically. It's still hard to navigate. Featured in my "Help! My thread is upside down!" thread.
style="filter:gray"
Makes your CP grayscale.
style="filter:invert"
Inverts all colors on your CP.
style="filter:wave(strength=2,freq=5,lightstrength=20)"
Makes your CP all wavy.
* Note: ixnay37 is not responsible for any damage done to your control panel. Do this stuff at your own risk.
