it would help me a lot if someone gets it next time, to check on the history of that window(the "down" button on the back bar choice)

Is that nasty paypopup.com a legit Apolyton thing or an invader. It's a massive nuisance and I thought it had been got rid off yesterday?

Yes every time I change thread here at Aolyton. It pops up 4 fold. (I have my browser on 'warn me about cookies'). Even when I click cancel it doesn't seem to stop it 50% of the time from pop that casino wheel. And two days ago it tried to download something.
This wasn't here last week Is It new?

I tried to run into the dialer popup and frequently visited its favorite places (news and PMs), but didn't get it. It seems to have stopped. Still yesterday it annoyed the hell out of me, but today not one appearance.
If I see it again, I will post a screenie of the history window.

Marko,
I just had another one. It was in the classic games forum and as I started to type a new post something wild happened. The computer screen rolled down after the first few letters and it did not register anymore of my typing. I had another window open at another site dict.leo.org (a german/english dictionary) and MS Outlook. On the back button the screen had the following (from the top): Pop-Under Advertisng, Paypop.com _Advertising_Loading_Window. It again asked me to download and to install software. It also warned after I pressed cancel that I have to press og in order to install the software correctly!!!
So long...
PS: I have a screen shot with the back button history. I can email that to you if you need it!

I just tried surfing Poly with Opera and any external links to pages using the go.php linking system caused me at least one pop-up window per link and most of them were gambling related.
I re-constructed the pop-ups by surfing to Poly with MSIE and I immidiately got 2 pop-up ads. The window redirects to http://pops.freeze.com/santa/wshp5/i...f=freezegopop6.
In the end it adverts in a Macromedia Flash animation a free and innocent looking Christmas screensaver titled Free Santa's Workshop Screen Saver. Nice screensaver, but as I tested it and scanned for spyware with Ad-Aware, I noticed that unless you uncheck all boxes in the installation program, you will receive heaps of pure spam.
When I returned back to the MSIE window again, I got a pop-up from http://66.227.36.231/sendout2xa.93.php that opened a special window called "Ad-viewer"
I also found the casino pop-up that seems to start downloading an installer for the casino software.
http://216.12.219.48/~admin1/adserving/rd350.php
However I didn't get anything, even if I clicked on the links with MSIE, unless you mean those 3-4 other casino pop-ups you get by doing that.
Anyway, those pop-ups screwed up my MSIE settings by locking the toolbars and enabling "Personalized Favorites Menu."
Hilarious statement from one of the pop-ups...
"We do not provide any free or not commercial services."

thanks Pioneer, ralph. i've contacted the service on the issue. they are supposed to offer the ability to no show some categories of ads(although i'm not sure where a dialer ad would probably be in)

BTW, I just discovered one nice thing. As those pop-up ads are using the Macromedia Flash plug-in, it seems to be that the Flash animation includes some code that seems to start a file download with some browsers, I just noticed that you can apparently at least forbid the plug-in from storing files on your hard drive from "doubleclick.net" (yes, it's an ad running on DoubleClick's advertising network and it stores a cookie that Ad-Aware has listed as spyware). Instructions:
1. Right click on the animation and choose Settings from the menu.
2. Go to the tab marked with a folder icon.
3. Set the amount of data to none and tick the "Never" box.
Just some nice little gimmick. Doesn't necessarily help at all, but at least you don't have to store those animations in your browser's cache memory.

Thanks for understanding us Markos .
I doubt that's a "dialer ad", it's probably just an attempt to force a dialer for a premium (probably "adult") service on our computer. I have no desire to check what it really is, as it can get very expensive. Several lawsuits are going on here on this issue.
If it was just an annoying popup ad, I'd say get over it, but this one is both annoying and very dangerous.
Thanks again!

I am wondering is this only a problem for the surfers from Germany? It seems that me and Ralph received it simultaneously!
EDIT: @ Ras, it seems that this is a different problem!
So long...

Dialers aren't a problem if you don't have a modem.

I don't have a modem but DSL, and my router runs on Linux, if that is what you suggest. But I have enough common sense to care about others who still have one.

Could well be as I didn't get it at all, even if I tried, and it's known that Poly uses targeted advertising with DoubleClick. Markos has apparently configured the ad displaying script so that users coming from German hosts show targeted Amazon.de banner ads for Germans. But I have also noticed that this also seem to count for other banners too as users from Finnish hosts get targeted Finnish DoubleClick ads (e.g. the Kompuutteri Kaikille magazine had recently a Finnish banner ad campaign on DoubleClick and it was seen here too by me).

Even if the dialer succeeds to install, it probably can't hurt anyone outside Germany, unless they have the same pre-select 0190... for premium services.

pioneer, the specific pop-up service is showing specific ads for each country. given that the text is in german(and from this thread), i think it's safe to say that it's shown on german visitors only

In Finland there's no phone numbers or area codes that start with 1 or 01 as 112 is the public emergency number like in Germany. But it's still for me too a matter of principle if a pop-up window downloads unwanted software to your PC, even if it couldn't do any harm as you're not using a modem.

I am wondering how Poly looks when you are in a different country?! I'll be in the US over Christmas and if I surf I'll check it out!

Markos, isn't there any other option for incomes than gambling ads that want to download software? Not because I would be against gambling. Could you finally consider introducing premier memberships that allow access to Poly without ads or maybe give something extra for the subscribers? Or a second alternative would be setting up a donation scheme using e.g. AnyPay and Amazon.com (not PayPal as it's known for fraud).

Mmmm... should I or should I not belive that? I guess I should, since I did see Markos sitting on the street corner wearing rags and asking for people to put some coins in his Poly cup the other day.

Markos, what is with all this Xuipter junk that IE keeps telling me to sign and download? I just don't trust poly enough to download this.

Thawn,
Maybe we should instead launch a more dramatic fund raising campaign. "Be a beggar and save Apolyton." If you volunteer to beg at e.g. your local shopping centre, you will get as a bonus the membership of the "Honourary Apolyton Guild" and a custom title.
