Leonardovich
No doubt this question has been asked and answered before, but since it was brought up on a recent thread [and I'm ignorant and lazy ], I thought I'd ask again.
How exactly does Leonardo's Workshop upgrade units? Is it solely on the basis of Role/Preq/Until entries?
A scenario by an obscure author , Red October, has the following entries in @UNITS, all of which can be built by the Central Powers civ. The first 3 appear and are replaced in sequence as a result of GiveTech events (Ban, then AFl). What happens to Fighter (G) during all this and why?
Au-Hun Cav(S), Ban, 0, 0.,0, 0a,4d, 2h,1f, 5,0, 3, no , 000000000000000
Au-Hun Cav..., AFl, 0, 3.,0, 5a,3d, 2h,1f, 5,0, 3, Ban, 000000000000000
Deserters...., Amp, 0, 1.,0, 0a,2d, 1h,1f, 6,0, 3, AFl, 000000000000000
Fighter (G).., nil, 1, 10.,1,4a,3d, 2h,2f, 6,0, 3, nil, 000000001010001
How does the AI handle units with a 'wrong' role, such as a land unit set for air or naval superiority?

The short answer is that nothing happens to the fighter, as it is not rendered obsolete.
Longer answer: The problem was to change several types of ground units (artillery, German inf and cav, Austro-Hungarian inf and cav ) from static units, to mobile units and then into deserters, using Leonardo's and ONE technology. The AI couldn't distingush between the types and would convert all those with the same MF into the same replacement unit. By giving each type of unit a different role (attack, defend, air sup, naval sup and sea trans) the AI was able to keep the units straight.
Was that obscure enough for you?

Gee Tech that was you?! Yeah, I s'pose I could have done this via email, but it was a good idea from which maybe someone besides me could learn.
So if you had dozens of other units with the same role as AH Cav, they would be completely unaffected by GiveTech events -- as long as their 'until' tech is not reached?
I'm asking this cuz I'd like to specifically replace two units without touching ~24 other types that could be present at the time.
In the regular Civ2 game, why are Ironclads but not Frigates replaced by Destroyers? Because of Frigate holds?
Frigate.., E1 , 2, 4.,0, 4a,2d, 2h,1f, 5,2, 2, Mag, 000000000000000
Ironclad., E1 , 2, 4.,0, 4a,4d, 3h,1f, 6,0, 2, SE , 000000000000000
Destroyer, nil, 2, 6.,0, 4a,4d, 3h,1f, 6,0, 2, E1 , 100000000000001

Must be. But isn't a galleon replaced by a transport, which has a larger holds capacity?

Yeah, the key must be the difference between zero and nonzero holds.
So, maybe if I want to make sure that a unit does not get Leonarded, I should give it a hold. Have to test that with land units, where the hold is otherwise useless.
