Sorry, no hard feelings Euros
A while ago I started the infamous thread about America being the greatest nation in the world right now. I didn't mean to sound like I think Americans are superior. There has to be a greatest nation in the world right now, it'd be hard to have a tie, so if it you think it's your country, that shouldn't be considered bragging. The last statement of my opposers about who was the best was Finland. I think we might just be tad bit more influential than Finland, having a larger economy, being a pioneer in civil rights (only in some aspects, not about slavery or women's rights), have a larger military, having more resources, more land, being more technologically advanced (who went in space first, Finland or America?), etc. I though since I started the thread I should have the last word, so let's stop arguing about it. I meant no harm. In fact, it's ironic I'm viewed as someone who doesn't like Euros; my goal for some time now has been to Germany as a foreign exchange student, and also, the average Euro I have met I have liked more than the average American. Anyway, I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Will you accept my apology?

Re: Sorry, no hard feelings Euros
Hmm...I highly doubt this is an apolgy thread. Somehow, I think this is yet another desperate attempt at an ego expansion. Anyway......Typical American sentiment. "More is better".
Finland is truely a much more grand country than America can even dream of becoming as in your current state it would take many many MANY years for you to even begin matching the level of Finland. I'm sure the finns of course understand it, and probaly many others.
However you Americans can't seem to grasp the concept of something being better than you. When proof is given in front of you, you seem to shut your mind and go into a trance-like state. It's amazing what barriers you will put up to protect you from the truth, and that is your greatest disadvantage.
(*Waits for the inevitable wave of American responses and attacks*)
Long live the great nation of Finland!

Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Pony trekking or camping,
Or just watching TV,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
It's the country for me.
You're so near to Russia,
So far from Japan,
Quite a long way from Cairo,
Lots of miles from Vietnam.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I want to be,
Eating breakfast or dinner,
Or snack lunch in the hall,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.
You're so sadly neglected,
And often ignored,
A poor second to Belgium,
When going abroad.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.
Finland, Finland, Finland,
The country where I quite want to be,
Your mountains so lofty,
Your treetops so tall,
Finland, Finland, Finland,
Finland has it all.
Finland has it all.
Finland has it all.

Bah, America is much better. Not all of America is subject to four-month winter nights. And in the summer time, the sun goes down. Plus, we don't have to speak Finnish.

Whilst England is of course, the Greatest nation on Earth, it has been my goal also to move to Germany , or perhaps France, due to the difference in cost of living.
Cheers

1. Explain why the sun shined e.g. yesterday and maybe even today here.
2. Outright lie. That only counts for a certain period of time north of the Arctic circle.
This just proves how bad the American geography classes are.
Regarding the Finnish language, I have to add that we have better chances to learn properly many Asian and European (except for English) languages.

But still not in everything like communications (not military) and Internet use. Finland has the largest number of mobile phones, if compared how many percentage of the population has. Now it's over 75%. Internet access is common and equally available to all for free in public bulidings (e.g. your libraries can only dream about that, unless the state you happen to live in has understood how important libraries are). BTW, the Finnish Meteorological Institute has provided monitoring equipment for several satellites of ESA, so that's still an achievement, if we compare how much you spend on e.g. NASA. But yes, you can still claim that you "own" the Moon as you put up that flag there.

BTW, there's one large mistake in your text.
America first in space? Njet. Tass, I assume you remember Laika and Yurij Gagarin? John, do you remember them? Nope, apparently. The USSR was first in space.

Just a yet another stereotype that it's cold here and polar bears walk in the streets, etc. Actually it's frequently +25-30 degrees Celsius warm during the summer here, so I wouldn't call that cold.

I find it ironic that in a thread debating the best nations on Earth that so much emphasis is placed on those who've gone to space. Perhaps it's a subliminal statement that the best countries on Earth are the ones that are advancing towards getting off (and maybe staying off) of it?

Well FInland is a pretty nice country given their humiliation of the USSR during the Winter War. I still think we have an edge over Finland though because we defeated the Finnish puppet regime in Germany during WWII.

It shows how low the US has sunk in world standings since Dubya came to power - they have to resort to saying "We are better than Finland".

We here at Hong Kong may be a bit higher, probably approaching 100%. When you see Fillipino mates and eighty year old women walking around with them, you know you have it in the bag

You Hong Kong people aren't a real country, you are a lap dog and servant of one of the evil and repressive Beijing reegime. And Finland has a higher mobile phone rate then the PRC which you are a part of, so they still beat you. :P
