They write simple catchy songs that are okay for a while and get old pretty fast.
Isn't that the EXACT description of the music you're complaining about?!?!!

you might as well hang an eminem poster on your wall and start singing "i'm the real slim shady" as you walk around

I don't hate Eminem's music, I hate who he is, or more accurately, purports himself to be.

I'm not against catchy music, and people that are should be ashamed of themselves.

The music I'm complaining about is boring, bland music...how you got that confused with catchy tunes is a bit beyond me.

I realize that a couple people will call Nickelback boring and bland, but I think their tunes are quite catchy, there's just not too much depth to them.

I can't understand why people who have no other apparent fault to speak of would like Blur.

Quote:
I like "odd". In moderate doses. I like the post-modern juxtaposition of two familiar elements. I like the avant-garde feeling of two pieces alomst, but not exactly, fitting together, creating unfamiliar harmonies and dissonances. I like the african-style polyrhythms that patchwork music like this, or most hip-hop, or most singnificantly Jamaican Dancehall are very able at conveying. Rhythmical complexity rocks.
Not only did I understand all of that but I agree too. With one exception. The real brilliance is when the rythmical patterns are produced by elements which are not "familiar" as you said with eachother.

The more at odds the more the challenge the more the reward and the more the "progressiveness".

Unfortunately 90% of these attempts result in the dysharmony they try to mock.

And for all of the Americans that list some Canadian artists they hate, I assure you I can make a far larger list of American artists I hate.
I can also list far more than five good American bands off the top of my head.

List more than five good current Californian bands.

California actually has more population than Canada...

I'll start you out:
Incubus
--------?
--------?
--------?
--------?

We should compare country to country, not state to country. So since US is ~4 times the pop of Canada, I'll list 20 bands from the US. We agreed?

Listing them for my next post...

The Beatles were a good band?

No, seriously, they suck.

4 times?!

Canada: 30M
USA: 290M

Now what's 30 * 4, Jaguar?
That would be nearly 10 times, not 4.

Totally sure.
I think it may be 31M now though, but close enough...

Canada seems like it has a lot more people on the internet, since more Canadians have the internet than Americans by a good margin (in percent of population, of course), and our broadband penetration is about twice that of the US so we're on longer.

Hell, since no one else will do it, here's some Cali bands. To make it more difficult, I'll only list albums I own (and can conveniently see from the computer). Here goes...

311
Beck
Green Day
No Doubt
The Offspring
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Stone Temple Pilots
Sublime
Tenacious D

That's eight and I didn't even list minor bands and those groups that I think are from California, but I'm not sure of. Pretty easy challenge, if you ask me.

Its 34m. So that's like 40 bands then... I still can list them though. I could also deal with the California challenge if rappers counted, because I know where they're from. However, you'd say rappers don't count because they suck, and I'd disagree, and this debate would get nowhere. So I guess I'll just start listing, then. BTW, you said earlier that you can list more sucky bands from the US than I can from Canada... well can you list nine times as many?

If you're going to list No Doubt I get to list Alanis Morisette.

Only Alanis still makes rock and No Doubt has shifted over to pop/dance(?)...

Oh easily.
The vast majority of bands in the world are crap.

And the population of Canada as of July 2002 is 31,413,990, not 34M.

Sublime is from Cali? I thought they were from Arizona. I had RHCP, Greenday, Offspring, and Incubus, and I was stalling for more time... I shouldn't have given up.

I admit that that was a cheap trick because I knew you couldn't be arsed to list 63 sucky bands.

Sublime is from Long Beach.

And California makes great music. I happen to have lived in both California and Canada and like both Canadian Rock and California-style.

List Alanis if you want; Canada still can't hold a torch to California, which is just one state in our illustrious union. I could list a lot more Californian bands, but I'd be forced to turn to the newer bands (Incubus, Linkin Park, etc.) that I can't stand.

I could list a lot more Canadian bands too, that was hardly a complete list.

The point is, both styles are awesome.

I'm sorry if you've been tainted by Blur to see that.

Incubus especially (how dare you list them with Linkin Park) are awesome.

There are three regions of the US that produce good rock music:

Seattle area.
California.
Southern states.

Linkin Park and Incubus quite a bit different if you ever, you know, listened to some recent albums from both.

What good rock bands came from New York?

I know The Strokes came from the New York area, and that puts New York off to a horrible start...

The US has much more hip-hop, which explains the relative lack of Rock bands in the Southeast. Most musicians are rappers there. There's also a lot of them in New Orleans, St Louis, California, and the Northeast. Canada is almost entirely a rock country (albeit not a very good one.) (Sorry, couldn't resist. )

As you can see, Canada has better music taste in general Jaguar.

The vast majority of hiphop out there is degenerative crap. There's some good stuff out there I don't mind, but hiphop has a higher crap:quality ratio than any other genre I can think of, aside from Country.

Three(3? wtf?) Five words: "It's getting hot in here"

New York isn't at its best right now, but rock music is hurting all over the US. New York has an illustrious past, however, being the birthplace of punk and all. I couldn't even begin to list all the great bands that have come out of New York.

Everyone has different music taste. One would think something is unbearable to hear while one may not. Just because you and your friends think it suck/rules doesnt mean its necessarily an universal truth. Nor just because MTV or some other media says so doesnt either. Most likely when you move yourself out of your little community bubble and find yourself in a different place that mostly thinks your favorite group sucks, i bet you wouldnt feel too great about them offending them. How can you judge art really?
