SMACX Question: Extra Tech W/Manifold Secrets?
Does anyone know if The Secrets of the Manifolds tech (D13) gives a free tech if you're the first to discover it, like all the other "Secrets" techs do?

Yes.
Go to alphax.txt, and look for the tech in the list (copy below)
Secrets of the Manifolds, SecMani, 0, 5, 4, 2, SentRes, AlphCen, 000000001
the '1' at the end of the flag string indicates that the first faction to discover it gets a subsequent free tech.
Quote:
flags = Special tech flags
; 000000001 = "Secrets": first discoverer gains free tech

Helium Pond or Googlie, Have either of you ever gotten a late game Secrets, Creation or Alpha Centauri, by using an artifact and not gotten the extra tech? It it happens to me all the time. Ned

Can't say I've noticed (are you sure you were the first to discover that tech?) - but in any case by the time we're into the late techs I'm usually artifact'ed out or ythe remaining unpopped pods are half way around a humungus planet..
Plus nowadays I nearly always play with seeded landing areas only - in SP I think the pods help the human far more than the AI, and we don't need any extra help (well, maybe I do - see my game comments in the Strategy forum)

Ned,
The same problem occurs with "discovering" SotHB by pod popping. You will miss out on the free tech.
