I can't get DosBox V0.55 to play MOO 1 w correct colors.
Why???

No clue. Get an old PII or PIII to run Win98 and forget DosBox. Have a dual boot, go to XP.

DOSBox? Is that under XP? If so, consider having DOS together with XP. I haven't tried it under XP, but NT recognises DOS and let you directly booting into it.
