I have used the pillaging with explorers strategy many times. The AI's 'capture' them and sometimes you will even see them return to some enemy city. But they never comeout again and are not there when I finally take the cities. My guess is that they are converted to shields.

Prep:
We should have at least 12 Explorers by D-Turn (maybe more, I'm working on CP now).
And a few more Cav, Rifle & Cannon. Mostly cannons, followed by Cav & Rifle. Drafting is an option that I'll Reserve for for later, after RP. We shall see.

Btw, are we executing Operation: Staging Point or not?
Edit: well, of course we are. It's necessary if we want to cut Berlin off in one turn. I'm just making sure.
Could I have gotten nervous?

Anyone ever notice that Germany is almost always one of the top AI civs? I have never seen the SPDG get so nervous over a war.

It's probably because this is the make or break point. THis war will deside if we are to become what the Great Banana wishes us to be or if we are to to fall by the wayside and become a footnote in History.

I almost always notice England being one of the top civs, which would seem counter-intuitive with their lousy UU and measly expansionist trait. But there is precisely why I think the AI does so well with England... the AIs are (collectively) using a strategy that makes the expansionist trait more valuable than if everyone were playing human civs (in my opinion). As for the commercial trait, v1.29 and PTW make it a powerhouse.

My expereince with the England being controlled by the AI is the opposite of Arnelos.
I've only seen Liz still around during the modern era once.

Whoops. Roadcage is right. (I forgot to give Naviation to the Civ I had attacking an explorer.)
Still, this means we have a chance to capture 'em back; even better.

In my last game, the last two civs to demolish were the English and Germans. (Modern Age)

With explorers, it seems that we can surround Berlin in one turn.
