well, religeously speaking, the jews and muslims don't use our common year enumeration. year '0' (well, actually they started counting with '1' ) is a christian definition, but has generally been accepted in the western world.

to call it BC/AD might be offensive, but using BCE/CE only enforces "our" enumeration in other regions: year '0' is still defined by christians.

before changing the abbreviations, the english speaking world would better enforce the metric system

'Our' calendar starts at year 1, not year 0.

According to legend 1. january 01 is the date when Jesus was baptized.

Jews and muslims have their own calendars but nowadays they are used for ceremonial purposes only. The christan BC/AD calendar dominates everyday life almost everywhere.

hmm... why would you call the US hte poorest? its technicall not although from what I read the rich poor difference is widdening higher than most other contries comparable to the US
