the ottomans occupied EVERY square oustide of Tours as one of my armies marched towards it. there was no reason to move S of the city other than to shut me out.

accident? maybe. but it's quite promising.

I don't think it is an accident. Had this in my last game with Japan being on an island of, I guess about, 20 squares. All coastal squares were occupied and I had to build marines before I could land. But even then... the Japanese were far back in technology but they build so many units it was almost impossible to overtake them. Even three civs way ahead in technology did not make it. Did not finish the game yet but it was quite funny.
