A freaky commerce/science question...
Help!
One of my cities produces commerce - it has two shoppingmalls & two outposts (or what was the first terrain improvement which comes with horse riding)...
The city is size 22, it has academy, university and printing press, but it doesn't produce any science (those lab bottles). This city has no specialists (all are working the land). My empire is at democracy, and science is set to 80%. I have also built the Lycaeum-wonder...
Why doesn't that city produce any science?

What is your Wages set to? The 80% science will only come from the Wages level you set and higher wages leaves less of a commerce "pool" for the 80% science to come from.
My guess would be because your paying so much gold for upkeep of buildings and wages that science is being drained. Theres not really much point in building academies universities etc if your city isnt producing at least 20+ science to begin with. If you sell some science buildings in that city, ironically it might start producing science. But i would try and get your wages level to 4Gld first and sacrifice food rations first.

Yep... my wages is set to max... that could explain it, though I'm not very familiar with this game..
And yes, the city wasn't making any money (the 'income' was negative).
Thank you!
Another question: do roads increase commerce?

Oh, and an interesting sidenote.
That particular city is located right next to my capital, which is producing +1000 science per turn...

Nope roads only lower movement cost, so no ugly sprawl, unless you want to

academy, university & printing press
it has 4 adv.mines and a river going through the city... no commerce improvements.

And apparently commere terraforming... I had a city with about 230 science. I built 8 nature preserves on surrounding forests - after that the science was 1200 in that city... WOW!
