Explosion in numbers
Has anyone else noticed the number listed as citizens (part of the Civ3 Demo game civgroup) has exploded from under 100 to near 150 in but a week or two? Do we have a DL alert here or are the news updates drawing in new members? And if these new members are around, please can you make yourselves known?
It would be great to have some perspective beyond those that we cantankerous old establishmentarians have about our game. After all, it is your game now too.

Maybe they are a flood of immigrants from other civ sites who wish to study us for some upcoming inter site game.
18 of them have made a whopping 0 posts total between them and almost twice that many have made less than 9 posts each. Not that that tells you anything.

It's solely because of the Newz Update.
Wow, that is quite a population explosion... but, except from a few posts like pardan's, I haven't seen many new people around. Hopefully all the new members will start posting once they've lurked a while and know what the heck is going on. I know I pretty much observed for a while when I first joined the game.

When I first joined, I almost immediately jumped into the discussions of esoteric topics that had little to do with gameplay at first and then progressed to discussing gameplay-related stuff when I got the chance to look closely at the save file...
I'll admit that my experience is probably atypical, though

Not as atypical as you think. I myself found myself first posting in the Ethics thread as that's all I had to contribute at the time.

Heya,
I'm a newbie that's newly signed on, I ain't said much because I've been trying to read all the old posts and stuff and see whats going on, also I don't have a personal comp with which to look at the saved games yet, not till after xmas when I'm getting one off a mate.
I'm still new to Civ 3 in general, but played Civ 2 for years the classic as it was, if anyone has any advice on what I should do as a new senate member it would be good to hear
Regards

Nolan -- Welcome to the game . We're always looking for new players, and if you have any trouble figuring out what's going on, feel free to ask -- we all remember how confusing it was when we first joined .

Welcome, Nolan!
As said by AdaMada, feel free to ask. We are very friendly here (well, not everybody, but you can't have all... ). Keep an eye on the Gazette and the Directory Thread . To see what's happening without the save, go to this thread and you'll find the maps of the game (well, what's wrong with some advertisement? ).

The Senate should pass a bill that states that anyone who performs a public service should be allotted advertisement space.
Nolan, welcome to the game!!!
Here, have a free banana. We Apolytonians worship bananas as all-powerful deities, you see. If you ask me that's just remnants from our Pagan era.

Thanks for being friendly guys.
It's been good reading all the interesting things you guys discuss in your posts it must all be a lot of work.
After xmas I hope I'll be able to say more about the game as I'll actually be able to view the saves (the computer I'm using here doesn't have civ 3), one thing I'm interested in is do you think that the rush of new members will cause a number of new political parties to be formed, or just result in a larger proportion of people being independents?
Thanks

Mostly independents, I guess. Talking about parties... Here's the Labor Party's thread (It's my Party ). To be fair, here's the DIA's thread.
Beware of that guy with the Senator Palpatine's avatar (just kidding)! He's our next Prez.

Are there any other new people around here I could chat to, so I can see how they're finding things and the such, also why isn't there a religous party in the game?

Hi, I'm new also. I've been checking out the DG for a while now, but hadn't joined because I didn't have Civ3 yet. Well a few weeks ago I bought the Game of the Year edition, and decided to join once I knew what was going on with this new version of Civilization(new to me anyway, even though its been out for over a year!). I'm still learning the ropes of the DG but I think I've got a handle on it.
I have one question for you guys, the GOTY edition is version 1.29. I think i read in an old thread that the DG was using version 1.21. Will i be able to use the saves with my version?

Yes, but the tech beaker costs, and diplomacy deals will be different pricing (more) in v 1.29

You can make a dual installation of the game, one with the 1.29 and other with the 1.21 patch.
But I can't find the thread about the dual installation... and I can't remember how I did this. Hey guys, could someone give us a help?

Dunno about a dual installation, but if you download both the 1.29 patch and the 1.21 patch you can run the 1.29 patch to uninstall it, then run the 1.21 patch to install it. When you want to switch back to 1.29, you do the opposite: run the 1.21 patch to uninstall, then the 1.29 patch to install.

They had installed 1.29 on one harddrive and the elderly version on another harddrive.

Without any registry collissions?
I've never tried this myself but I'd expect there'd be a registry collission if you install the game twice (doesn't matter if you install it on different HDs).

I'm new too. I joined initailly for the PTWDemo game, but had been following the site and the trials and tribulations of Apolytonia, the Banana Republic, for awhile now.
Arnelos' advice is sound on how to get involved in this game. I also enjoyed sitting in on the turn chat last evening to watch the country's leadership in action.
Also - join a party. Choose Labor. Workers rule!!
With the PTWDemo game it was a bit more of "jumping in at the deep end". Thankfully my teammates were more than patient with me, and taught me how to get around the forums and chats. Thank-you Vox. Still learning. But hey, that's OK too.
Fabulous site, with great members. What more could you ask for?!!!
(woof woof)
